Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals opine that advertising is extremely successfull at persuadinng us to buy things whereas others postulate that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it . In the upcoming essay I have discussed both the views and included my opinion at the end.

On one hand, advertising has become extremely syccessfull in persuading people to buy things. This is because in the modern epoch, people rely on social media for most of their entertainment such as binge watching reels, watching youtube short or long type of videos. In such kind of entertainment especially in long videos some ads are played which are not skipable and the user has to watch it fully. These advertisements are designed such beautifully that one gets tempted to buy that thing. Also in youtube shorts or instagram reels, bussiness upload the reel of their product which results in increasement of their sale as people prefer to watch reels and get attracted to buy that thing. To exemplify, most of the sale of a shoe brand named Comet is due to online advertisments.

On the other hand, advertising has become so common that people no longer pay attention to it. Some advertisement such as the advertisement of cadburry dairy milk is runniing since last 10 years and people no longer opay attention to it as they have now became so much familiar to that chocolate. Already the saleof this chocolate is very high and still the company spends so much money on advertising it; the advertisement become less effective.

In my opinion, advertising has become extremely successfull in persuading people to buy things as when we repeatedly see an advertisement of a particular item, we get interested in buying it and end ub being the buyer of it. For instance, the sale of the car TATA nano was not much in the initial stages after its launch but due to numerous posters of this car hung at the roadside, highways or in the market made people think about this car and eventually the sale of nano boosted.

To conclude, advertising has become extremely successfull in persuading people to buy thing as frequent advertising makes an impressive picture of the product in the mind of buyer and it leads to increase in sale of that product but the advertisment of products which are already in demand does not increase the sale upto expectations as people satrt to ignore it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing a clear personal position throughout the essay. The student states their viewpoint that advertising is extremely successful and supports it with relevant examples, such as the car TATA Nano and shoe brand Comet. However, the development of ideas leans towards repetition, particularly in the conclusion where similar points are restated. While the ideas are relevant, they could be further extended with more sophisticated analytical depth to reach higher bands. Nevertheless, the prompt is fully addressed with a consistent position, placing it solidly within the Band 6 descriptor criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs representing different views, a personal opinion paragraph, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, transitional phrases and referencing can be repetitive or awkward, such as the abrupt introduction in the second sentence ('In the upcoming essay I have discussed both the views'). Additionally, spacing punctuation errors around periods affect the flow. Progression is present, but mechanical linkage prevents it from achieving a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'postulate', 'epoch', and 'tempted'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the response, including 'successfull', 'persaadinng', 'syccessfull', 'short' instead of 'shorts', 'bussiness', 'increasement', 'advertisments', 'cadburry', 'runniing', 'opay', 'became', 'saleof', and 'satrt'. These errors demonstrate a lack of precision in word formation and spelling. Although communication is not seriously impeded, the frequency of spelling mistakes limits the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the car TATA nano', 'advertisement of cadburry dairy milk'), incorrect verb forms ('became so much familiar', 'does not increase the sale upto expectations'), and awkward prepositions. Punctuation errors, such as spaces placed before commas and periods, are also noticeable throughout the text. Despite these issues, the meaning remains clear, fitting the Band 5.5 to 6.0 threshold; a score of 6.0 reflects the mix of structures used despite persistent errors.
