IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertising the products encourage us to buy them and this method is very sucessful. On the other hand some people believe that advertising does not compel us to buy things while I personally believe that advertisement play a key role in selling products.

In recent years, the use of social media has been increased dramatically by the people all around the world. Manufacturing companies use this tool to sell their products and increase their sales. They promote their products from public figures and actors, as they have huge fan following. They post the selling items on social media apps and this increase the sales of their company. People nowadays are following the trends on the digital apps so as a result they buy the products shown to them. The companies apply different strategies to sell their items and increase sales. For instance, most of the manufacturing units were recorded promoting the things they sell.

On the other hand some people say it is useless to waste their money on promoting their products as people will only buy the things they need. They would never buy an item which they do not need. Millions of people watch the promotion ads but only few of them buy it. Massive amounts of money is provided to public figures for promotion but this money can also be utilized in enhancing the quality of the product and making it better than before. For instance, companies can make good quality products by using the money they invest in advertisement.

In conclusion, selling companies should not invest huge amount of money in promoting their products and they should minimize this figure. More investment should be done on enhancing the quality of the product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and presenting the author's own opinion. However, the development of ideas lacks depth in certain sections. For instance, the discussion on social media relies on repetitive statements, such as 'increase their sales' and 'increase the sales of their company,' rather than extending the argument with varied evidence. The conclusion also introduces a slightly shifted stance regarding what companies should do with their money, which conflicts somewhat with the body paragraph's exploration of consumer habits. While the position is clear throughout, the ideas would benefit from greater elaboration and more precise examples to reach a higher band. Overall, the performance aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a clear four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, particularly with transitions like 'On the other hand' and 'For instance.' Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when pronouns or general nouns like 'things' and 'it' are used without precise antecedents. Progression is present, but the logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by abrupt shifts and redundancy. These features place the text firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to business and marketing, such as 'manufacturing companies,' 'strategies,' and 'investment.' However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'Advertising the products encourage' (subject-verb agreement error alongside unnatural phrasing) and 'fan following' instead of 'fan base.' Attempts to use less common vocabulary sometimes result in slight inaccuracies, such as 'selling items' instead of 'merchandise' or 'products.' Spelling is generally accurate, but the overall lexical control exhibits limitations that restrict the score to Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. For example, the writer successfully employs relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement ('Advertising the products encourage,' 'the use of social media has been increased,' 'Millions of people watch the promotion ads but only few of them buy it'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips occur across the text. Because these errors do not seriously impede communication but persist throughout the writing, the performance is best characterized by the Band 6.0 descriptors.
