IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The topic of discussion is whether advertising is still significant to encourage purchases. Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things whereas on the other hand some people thinks that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. I feel that advertising plays a crucial role in purchase intentions.

To begin with the first argument in favor of advertising, it shapes, helps identify and promote the brand. Advertising is basically the mediator between the brands and consumers. Advertising comes in different forms online, tv etc where different products are being advertised in a engaging way which grasps consumers attention. For instance many famous celebrities influencers are being hired for a brand advertisement knowing that people love them and will definitely buy the things which their favorite celebrity is promoting. Hence it sums up that advertising has a success ratio at persuading to buy things. For example if we look at Coach's last year campaigns and advertisement so they hired Jennifer Lopez a famous hollywood singer, it basically helped to increase the sales.

Moving onto the other end of the discussion which states that according to some people advertising is so common that people dont pay any attention. It is true and happnes due to repetitive patterns, same script, same celebrities. A clear stance is not being presented by the brands and they are just following the stereotypes which leads to boredom and many consumers prefer not pay attention and simply just skip. The market is so diversed and the dynamics are changing almost every day so people are looking for new content something that is unique for them and most of the advertisement fail to do so. If we take the example of Pizza Hut's advertisement it is mostly the same from 2000s and people just dont pay attnetion to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that advertising successfully persuades buyers and that it is too common to be noticed—while also presenting a clear personal opinion in the introduction. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of Coach and Jennifer Lopez, as well as Pizza Hut. However, some of the supporting points tend to be slightly repetitive or under-developed, particularly in the second body paragraph where the explanation of why ads fail could be pushed further. Overall, the positioning is consistent throughout, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6 in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and distinct body paragraphs. Transitional phrases such as 'To begin with' and 'Moving onto the other end of the discussion' are utilized to guide the reader through the argumentative structure. However, paragraphing could be managed with greater sophistication, and referencing is occasionally mechanical. Some cohesive devices are repetitive, and the transition between sentences at times lacks smoothness. This places the performance firmly in the Band 6 category, as logical progression is present but cohesion is sometimes faulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'purchase intentions,' 'mediator,' and 'stereotypes.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'thinks' instead of 'think,' 'diversed' instead of 'diverse,' 'happnes,' 'attnetion,' and punctuation slips like missing apostrophes ('dont'). While these inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6, reflecting sufficient range mixed with predictable slips in word form and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'Advertising comes in different forms online, tv etc where different products are being advertised in a engaging way which grasps consumers attention.' There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation oversights throughout the text, including missing commas, run-on structures, and minor preposition issues ('pay attention to it' vs 'pay any attention'). These errors occasionally disrupt the flow of reading, though they rarely obscure meaning, matching the criteria for Band 6.
