IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

A few individuals argue that advertising is successful at convincing us to purchase goods, while others opine that advertising is so common in this era that we no longer pay attention to it. This essay will discuss both the views before explaining my perspective.

To commence with, advertising is useful for advertisors beacause it impacts people thinking by repeatdly watching same advertising viewers get familiar to its product features and brand name. Moreover, brand owners use many psychological methods to create a positive assumption in front of viewers. For instance, some brands like Iphone get popularity by creating luxury image infront of people and now it is top most considered phone brand. Furthermore, individuals are interested to watch their favourite stars , therefore advertisors use them to show their company's product.

However, some contradictions can be seen as advertising is so common in these times. Firstly, people can feel frustrated and intrupted w hile watching content due to advertisements. Secondly, misinformation and scams are common in social media people do not believe in them and the money invested cin advertisements will be wasted. Furthermore, viewers may liloss interest if they are repeatdl;y watching same content in advertisement.

In my opinion, advertisements should contain right information regarding product hence the person can believe in them and there should be limit for advertisement to be reapeated as sometimes person can be doing serious work and they can interrupt.

In conclusion, advertisements are useful for brands as they influeced the audience mind and it can be financally helpful towards them. However, there are many difficulties arrived due to advertisement coming again and again and lack in task achievement for individuals, while misinformation creates other serious effects like scams and breaking in believe of person.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness versus its ubiquity and resulting indifference—and provides a clear personal opinion in the body and conclusion. The ideas are generally relevant, mentioning psychological tactics, celebrity endorsements, and consumer fatigue. However, some arguments are slightly repetitive or under-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs where explanations rely on simple assertions rather than deep elaboration. For instance, the point about misinformation is introduced but not fully tied back to the main prompt regarding attention levels. The position is maintained throughout the essay, but the depth of support aligns best with a Band 6.0 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into appropriate paragraphs, following a standard introduction, body, and conclusion structure. There is a clear logical progression overall, moving from the first view to the second view and finally to the writer's opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is handled reasonably well, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs occasionally suffers due to abrupt shifts in ideas, such as in the third paragraph moving from frustration to scams and then to repetitive content. Referencing is mostly clear, fitting the requirements of a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'psychological methods', 'luxury image', and 'misinformation'. However, there are frequent spelling errors throughout the response, including 'advertisors' instead of 'advertisers', 'beacause', 'repeatdly', 'intrupted', 'cin', 'liloss', 'reapeated', 'influeced', and 'financally'. These errors show limited control over word spelling and occasional word choice issues, such as 'breaking in believe of person'. While communication remains clear, the density of spelling mistakes prevents the lexical score from reaching Band 6.0, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using conditional and relative clauses such as 'while watching content due to advertisements' and 'hence the person can believe in them'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including run-on sentences, missing articles, and subject-verb agreement slips, such as 'viewers get familiar to its product features', 'some brands like Iphone get popularity', and 'there should be limit for advertisement to be reapeated as sometimes person can be doing serious work'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and demonstrate inconsistent control over complex forms, which is characteristic of a Band 5.0.
