IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In the contemporary world, advertising has become an omnipresent force, sparking intense debate regarding its actual efficacy. While a segment of society argues that modern marketing techniques are exceptionally potent in driving consumerism, others contend that the sheer volume of advertisements has rendered people indifferent to them. In my opinion, although traditional ads are increasingly ignored, subliminal and digital marketing strategies remain highly effective at influencing our purchasing behavior.

On the one hand, there is a strong case to be made for the persuasive power of advertising. Modern marketing is no longer just about displaying a product; it is a sophisticated science driven by data and psychology. Corporations utilize advanced algorithms to track online user behavior, delivering hyper-targeted advertisements that cater directly to an individual's recent searches and personal interests. Furthermore, the rise of social media influencers has revolutionized marketing. When consumers see a relatable personality endorsing a product, it builds instant trust, often leading to impulsive buying. Thus, tailored and emotionally charged campaigns continue to successfully manipulate consumer choices.

On the other hand, many believe that the ubiquity of marketing has backfired, leading to what experts call "ad blindness." The average urban resident is bombarded with thousands of promotional messages daily, ranging from digital pop-ups to roadside billboards. To cope with this sensory overload, the human brain naturally filters out these messages as background noise. Additionally, technological advancements have empowered consumers to actively reject advertisements. The widespread use of ad-blockers, premium ad-free streaming services, and the option to skip video commercials indicate that the public is actively avoiding corporate messaging.

In my opinion, while it is true that overt and repetitive commercials are losing their charm, advertising has simply evolved rather than lost its impact. Instead of forcing direct ads onto reluctant viewers, companies now rely on stealthier methods such as product placement in movies, sponsored content disguised as news, and organic influencer integration. Because these techniques blend seamlessly into the entertainment we choose to watch, they bypass our natural defenses. Consequently, even when we believe we are ignoring advertisements, our subconscious mind is still being successfully conditioned to favor certain brands.

In conclusion, while the over-saturation of traditional media has undeniably made consumers more cynical and dismissive of blatant commercials, marketing has adapted to remain successful. By utilizing subtle, digital, and psychological tactics, advertising continues to be an incredibly powerful tool in dictating global consumer trends.
