IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
People who say that advertising is extremeley successful at persauding us to buy things mainly notice that people standing on the bus station waiting for the bus,in the hospitals waiting for their turn and during traveling, people notice theseadvertisements because their eyes are just raoming around here and there.Consequently, they notice these advertisements. If they find them relatable to their lives they apprach them.On the other hand, people who think advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it mainly notice that many advertisements are scam so people cannot trust them anymore. Moreover the advertisement which is true is also treated as fake or scam and people dont pay attention. In my opinion, advertising is important because many peoplecan do research before buying and people reviewcan make it viral.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses both views regarding advertising, discussing the perspective that it is successful because people notice it in public spaces like bus stations and hospitals, as well as the view that people ignore it due to skepticism. It also provides a concluding personal opinion. However, the ideas are severely limited and under-developed due to the extreme brevity of the response. More importantly, the length requirement is NOT met, as the student's response contains only 125 words, falling well short of the mandatory 250-word minimum. This significant under-length constraint heavily caps the task achievement score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates some basic organisation, attempting to separate the two opposing views and introduce a personal opinion at the end. However, paragraphing is not utilised properly, as the entire response is clumped into a single block of text. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or mechanically applied, with instances like 'On the other hand' acting as the main transition. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of proper paragraphing prevents any clear overall progression or cohesive structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and basic. The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'advertisements', 'scam', and 'persuading', but there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'extremeley', 'persauding', 'raoming', and 'apprach'. Additionally, phrasing such as 'people reviewcan make it viral' lacks natural collocation and precision. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic meaning, but frequent lexical errors and a narrow range restrict the score to this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are numerous punctuation errors, particularly missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'bus station waiting for the bus,in the hospitals', 'Moreover the advertisement'). Run-on sentences and grammatical awkwardness are present throughout, such as 'the advertisement which is true is also treated as fake or scam and people dont pay attention.' While meaning is generally recoverable, the high frequency of errors and punctuation issues prevents higher band attainment.
