IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Firstly i talk about how ads are successful at persuading us to buy thing beacuse of the ads we get aware what is the trendiest product in the market and also the advantages and the benefit of the product they shows us the reality and the truth which we related from our daily life. For ex:-toothpastes are the very common thing which is used by everyone and there are lots of copy and fake brands who sells their harmful product but by the help advertising many people became aware about the real and fake product.
secondly
most of the people think that the advertising is very common that we no longer pay attention to it . It is true beacuse most of the ads are very illogical and very long time taking ads even though we are not interested in their product . for ex there are many tobacco ads which is irrelevant but still they do marketing to sell their product.
And mthe most common problem is the spaming of ads on chrome youtube and even on other third party app which is very irritating.
If i talk about my opinion i think very practically apart from telling advantages of the product and the disadvantages of the other companies products and also even though spamming the irrelevant ads which is very irritating. they should made try their product to the random person and get his/her genuine review about the item which i think is a very good way to sell the product

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that advertising is successful at persuading buyers and that it is too common to be noticed—alongside a personal opinion. However, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting evidence. For instance, the argument about toothpaste brands being copycats is vague and difficult to follow. The personal opinion section introduces novel ideas like trying products with random people rather than synthesizing the previous arguments directly. While a clear stance is established, the lack of depth and over-reliance on simple examples place this response firmly in the Band 5 category.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The organization of the essay is weak. The student uses phrases like 'Firstly i talk about' and 'secondly', which are overly conversational and mechanically rigid. Paragraphing is poorly handled, as the second main point is introduced abruptly with a broken line break ('secondly most of the people...'). Cohesive devices are either missing, repetitive, or inaccurate, and referencing is often unclear (e.g., 'they shows us', 'mthe most common problem'). There is a lack of overall progression throughout the text, leading to a disjointed reading experience that aligns with Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on general overall flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive throughout the essay. Words like 'product', 'ads', and 'common' are overused. There are numerous instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'spaming of ads', 'long time taking ads', and 'which we related from our daily life'. Spelling and morphological errors are frequent, including lowercase 'i', 'beacuse', and 'toothpastes'. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic meaning of the points being made, it restricts the reader and lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands, corresponding to a Band 5 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical structure of the essay is heavily restricted. The response consists mostly of long, run-on sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions or relative pronouns without proper punctuation (e.g., the opening sentence continues for several lines without a period). Punctuation is largely neglected, missing capital letters for the pronoun 'I' and the beginnings of sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('they shows us', 'brands who sells', 'tobacco ads which is', 'they should made try'), which occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. This demonstrates a limited range of structures and frequent errors typical of a Band 5.
