IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a growing discussion that whether advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things or that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Well both side have their own perspectives, I will elaborate both viewpoints in this essay.

People who believe that advertising is extremely successful in convincing others to buy things have strong reasons backing their stance. A good Advertisement makes a product look attractive in front of people, especially in this modern age marketing through social media heavily influences people to keep their inventory according to what they saw in reels or posts. Advertisement also elaborates the features of products which may attract potential buyers. Advertisement billboards on roads and streets might not persuade many people but there is a probability that if 100 people saw it, 5 out of them might actually buy the product being shown on the billboard. There are multiple ways in which people can advertise in this modern day and age based on the psyche of people according to their living conditions and their needs.

The other people who think advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it are not wrong either. People actually hate when straight up sponsored advertisements appears while scrolling on social media apps , they instantly scrolls down or skips the advertisement, only a handful of people actually watches it. People also get annoyed when an advertisement pops up in between their favorite tv shows or in their favorite sporting event and they want that advertisement to go away as quickly as possible.

In conclusion both views are backed by strong reasons but success of advertisements actually depends upon how attractive it is and several other factors like a catchy intro, needs of people and ongoing trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness versus widespread apathy—and provides an opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the second paragraph presents a clear argument about targeted marketing and provides a specific hypothetical example regarding billboard conversions, other points are less developed. For instance, the discussion on social media advertising and consumer annoyance in the third paragraph touches on relevant themes of ad-skipping and disruption, but remains somewhat superficial rather than fully explored. The position is clear throughout, but to reach a higher level, all main ideas require equal extension and robust support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a summarizing conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or is hindered by colloquial phrasing, such as starting the essay with 'Well both side have their own perspectives'. Referencing is not always entirely clear or smooth, and transitions between sentences can feel abrupt, demonstrating the characteristics of this level where cohesive devices are occasionally faulty or mechanical rather than naturally integrated.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'persuading', 'inventory', 'psyche', and 'disruption'. However, there are notable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Phrases such as 'straight up sponsored advertisements appears' contain errors in word form and agreement, and expressions like 'attractive in front of people' feel unnatural. Spelling and word choice errors are present, such as missing plural markers ('side' instead of 'sides') and awkward phrasing ('kept their inventory according to what they saw'), but these do not seriously impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. These include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'sponsored advertisements appears', missing articles like 'in front of people' or before 'success of advertisements', and run-on structures or comma splices in sentences like 'In conclusion both views are backed by strong reasons but success...'. Despite these recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures remain generally comprehensible.
