IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many people think that advertising is more successful at persuading everyone to buy things but, other people think advertising is so normal that we don't pay attention to purchase it. In my perspective advertisement to many repeated ad makes us to believe the product was very productive and can be used for long time.

The people who made that product and present it through the advertisement like it was very productive for their work which makes them to buy it. Also in this generation of technology any one can make make videos by the use of AI. It create products ad in few minutes like peoples willings to brought it after looking the ads. For instance, at the time of 2026 football world cup FIFA create an ad of Ronaldo and Messi playing chess by using AI. It was loved by their many fandoms and it makes them come to the stadium to watch them playing football.

Advertisement creates peoples to believe the showing product are can be use for long term. In the ad they present the like their product are non-distroyable and made peoples to think about it which makes peoples to trust the product. For example, in the US TV one company present gorila glue by making boat from the product, fixing chair using it and also they hang a truck thorugh the use of that glue.

In conclusion, I agree with advertising is extremely successful at peoples willings to purchase the product by presenting like very productive and can be used for term.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. While it attempts to discuss both views regarding the effectiveness and saturation of advertising and offers a personal opinion, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. The position is stated rather than logically argued, and the supporting examples are weak and difficult to follow. For instance, mentioning the 2026 football world cup and an AI chess game involving Ronaldo and Messi does not clearly support the argument about AI creating product ads quickly. Similarly, the example of gorilla glue being used to build a boat and hang a truck lacks clear contextual integration. The development of ideas stops prematurely, and the overall progression is restricted by the lack of clear analytical depth.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation evident with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, but the text lacks an overall clear progression. Cohesive devices are often inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'which makes' and 'for example' to link clauses and sentences. Referencing is also problematic at times, with pronouns like 'it' and 'them' having unclear antecedents, which disrupts the logical flow. While the overarching structure attempts to follow an essay format, the internal links between sentences are mechanical and fail to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic concepts about advertising, such as 'persuading', 'product', and 'generation of technology'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that cause difficulty for the reader and impede clear communication. Examples include phrases like 'to purchase it' instead of paying attention to advertisements, 'fandoms' instead of fans, 'non-distroyable' containing a spelling error and awkward coinage instead of indestructible, and 'willings' instead of willingness. Attempts to use less common vocabulary result in unnatural phrasing, keeping the lexical range restricted.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly fused sentence forms. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that cause significant difficulty for the reader. There are persistent problems with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'advertisement to many repeated ad makes us to believe', 'any one can make make videos', and 'thorugh the use of'. Furthermore, awkward clause structures like 'Advertisement creates peoples to believe' demonstrate a lack of control over basic grammatical patterns and complement clauses.
