Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing an opinion, which aligns with the requirements for this level. However, the ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, the argument that ads cause boredom and confusion due to repetition is introduced in the second paragraph, but it lacks sufficient explanation or specific examples. Similarly, the opposing view that advertisements are useful for finding products and helping businesses grow is mentioned briefly without fully exploring how or why this occurs. The writer's position is discernible throughout the text, notably in the introduction and conclusion, but the lack of extended support for the main points keeps the response at this level. To improve, the writer needs to expand on their arguments with clearer explanations and more detailed examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation present in the response, with a visible attempt to structure the essay into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall progression as the ideas within the body paragraphs jump between different points without smooth transitions. For example, the second paragraph shifts abruptly from internet advertising trends to consumer boredom and then back to purchasing pressure. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate, repetitive, or inadequate, such as the frequent reliance on 'some time', 'thats way', and basic connectors like 'but'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks logical flow, making it occasionally difficult to follow the writer's train of thought. To progress, the writer should use a wider variety of accurate cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed central idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary contains numerous noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice that frequently cause difficulty for the reader and impede communication. Examples of spelling errors include 'wrold' for world, 'feild' for field, 'proliferting' for proliferating, 'enternat' for internet, and 'mordern commercr' for modern commerce. There are also inappropriate word choices and non-standard collocations, such as 'fill bored' instead of feel bored, 'in persure' instead of under pressure, and 'besnuses' instead of businesses. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'ubiquitous' and 'indifference', the persistent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score. To improve, the writer must focus on accurate spelling, learn correct word forms, and build a stronger foundation of standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is limited, consisting primarily of simple sentences and basic structures, while attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence boundaries, which can cause difficulty and confusion for the reader. Notable issues include missing punctuation between sentences, incorrect verb forms and tenses (e.g., 'incrising verey rapidly', 'the saam to same advertais are repit'), and frequent omission or misuse of articles. Subject-verb agreement is also problematic in several places, such as 'the advertise ment are showing'. Furthermore, punctuation is largely neglected, with sentences often running together without proper terminal punctuation or capitalization. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures, improve control over basic grammatical rules, and pay closer attention to punctuation.
