IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Advertising has become an unavoidable part of modern life, appearing on television, websites, social media and even in public spaces. While some people argue that advertising remains highly effective in persuading consumers to purchase products, others believe that its sheer prevalence has made people largely indifferent to it. In my view, although repeated exposure can cause consumers to disregard many advertisements, well-targeted and persuasive advertising continues to have a significant influence on purchasing decisions.
On the one hand, advertising can be highly successful because it does more than simply inform people that a product exists. Effective advertisements are designed to associate products with particular benefits, emotions or lifestyles, thereby influencing how consumers perceive them. For example, an advertisement for a sports brand may not focus primarily on the technical features of its shoes, but instead portray successful and confident people using them. Consumers may consequently develop positive associations with the brand and become more inclined to purchase its products. In addition, modern digital advertising can be targeted at people according to their interests and online behaviour, making the advertisements more relevant than generic forms of advertising were in the past.
On the other hand, people are exposed to such a large volume of commercial messages that many advertisements are simply ignored. Consumers frequently encounter promotional content while watching videos, browsing websites, using social media or travelling through cities. As a result, they may automatically dismiss advertisements without consciously processing their messages. This is particularly true when advertisements are repetitive or unrelated to the individual's interests. For instance, someone who repeatedly sees the same online advertisement may eventually stop noticing it altogether, regardless of how frequently it appears. Moreover, increasing awareness of persuasive marketing techniques may make some consumers more sceptical of exaggerated claims.
In my opinion, advertising has not lost its persuasive power, but its effectiveness depends increasingly on how relevant and engaging it is. People may ignore a large proportion of the advertisements they encounter, yet a well-designed message that reaches the right audience can still shape consumer preferences and encourage purchases. Therefore, the widespread nature of advertising has reduced the impact of some forms of promotion without eliminating advertising's ability to influence behaviour.
Overall, advertising is undoubtedly easier to ignore when people are constantly exposed to it, but this does not mean that it has become ineffective. Its continued influence is particularly evident when advertisements are relevant, carefully targeted and capable of creating strong associations with a product.

Your response covers all parts of the prompt exceptionally well, presenting a fully developed position throughout the essay. You skillfully explore both views—that advertising successfully persuades consumers and that its omnipresence makes people indifferent to it—while maintaining a clear, well-supported personal stance. For instance, your explanation of how advertisements associate products with lifestyles rather than just technical features, such as your sports brand example, shows a high level of task extension.
