IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is argued that people say that advertising is highly successful in covincing us to buy things, while other people says that they no longer paying attention to advertisements, because it is so common. Both views are right on their circumstances. However, in my opinion advertising is actually very successful at satisfying peoples and growing brands business.

Those people who think that advertising is too much successful at persuading them to buy things are true on their views. Advertising helps people to choose the product according to their thoughts and also describe the product very well to increase the business sales. For example, Xiaomi sucessfully skyrocked their sales by advertising their phones very well infront of public. It also increase the demand of there phones, by which their business saw a dramatic growth.

On the other hand, those people who says that advertisements are too common that they no longer pay attention to it are somehow right on their views. There are too many brands nowdays who are advertising their products. It makes some people confuse to choose the right product, while sometimes people choose product that is not as good as they watch in advertisment and they get dissapointed. For example, royce rolls do not advertise thier cars because they know their audience will reach themself, whereas toyota lost his market shares by 20% in US because people are not paying attenion to thier ads.

In conclusion, i believe that former view is more considerable, because it boost a business sales which indirectly grow country economy. It is also sucessful to urge people for buying a thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, aligning with a mid-level performance. While the writer attempts to explain why advertising succeeds or fails through examples such as Xiaomi and Royce Rolls, the supporting points lack depth and detailed elaboration. For instance, the mention of Toyota losing market share is introduced without sufficient context. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend and support all arguments more thoroughly rather than relying on brief, generalized statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, featuring an introduction, two body paragraphs representing each view, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as the repetitive use of phrases like 'Those people who think' and basic transition markers. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in pronoun usage within the second body paragraph. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing enough range to discuss the topic of advertising. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'dramatic growth' and 'market shares', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, such as 'covincing', 'sucessfully', 'infront', 'confuse' instead of 'confused', and 'dissapointed'. Furthermore, proper nouns and brand names contain spelling errors like 'royce rolls'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips restrict the vocabulary score, as they occasionally cause slight difficulty or distraction for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic sentence forms alongside attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'other people says', 'they no longer paying', 'toyota lost his market shares', and 'people are not paying attenion to thier ads'. Punctuation and article usage also show frequent errors throughout the text. While communication is generally maintained despite these issues, the high frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from achieving a higher score.
