Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and remains severely incomplete, primarily because the student has failed to meet the required word count of at least two hundred and fifty words, stopping abruptly at just one hundred and seven words. Consequently, the discussion of both views and the personal opinion are presented in a very rudimentary and fragmented manner. While the writer attempts to introduce both perspectives in the introductory sentences, the ideas are limited and under-developed due to the lack of sufficient length. To reach a higher level, the student must expand their arguments fully, providing comprehensive explanations and examples for both sides of the prompt while strictly adhering to the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation present, evident in the initial signposting phrases such as 'On the one hand' and 'on the other hand', which attempts to structure the comparison of the two views. However, there is no clear overall progression across the text because the response trails off mid-sentence at the end. Paragraphing is attempted, but cohesive devices are inadequate, repetitive, or mechanically applied, and referencing is occasionally unclear. To improve coherence and achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that ideas flow logically from one paragraph to the next, complete all sentences and paragraphs fully, and use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect clauses and arguments smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, featuring frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that significantly strain the reader's understanding. Examples of these lexical shortcomings include 'advertment', 'eassy', 'dissuss', 'encouraged' instead of 'encouraging', 'attracted' instead of 'attractive', and 'beleive'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate only for expressing very simple ideas. To progress to a higher band, the student must expand their lexical repertoire to include less common items, improve word formation, and pay closer attention to spelling and accurate word collocation when discussing abstract topics like advertising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentence forms with frequent structural errors. There are persistent mistakes in verb forms and tenses, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and punctuation, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('some people', 'on the other hand'). Attempts at complex sentences are faulty, and frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader in interpreting the intended meaning. To achieve a higher score, the student must exercise greater control over basic grammatical structures, use correct punctuation and capitalization consistently, and incorporate error-free complex sentences with accurate clause subordination.
