IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A number of people believe that advertisement has succeeded tremendously in saling products, while others argue that advertisement is not worthy enough to convince people for buying. Although both views have some merits, I side with those who believe that it can influence the consumer's buying behaviour.

Those who believe that advertisement have nothing to do with buying argue that billboards on roads or ads on their devices are common enough to get a proper attention. Their argument is valid to some extent because people did not buy things as per their past experiences with these marketing trends. They argue that why someone buy the same product based on a billboard with whom his previous experience was not satisfactory. For instance, if a person bought a suit from a specific website which was not same as on billboard , he would not biu gain from the same again.

On the other hand, l agree with those who believe that advertisement has a substaintial role in our shopping. This is mainly because these days advertisement has changed enormously from billboards to the influnecers and sports heroes. These people get paid for wearing and posting with the required outfits or gadgets which their fans buy later on. A good illustration of this is Virat Kohli's shoes brand which had a significant number of sales just because a number of cricketers appear with those shoes on different TV shows and matches. This shows that advertisement is influencing more than ever.

In Conclusion, although there are a few reason to argue about advertisement influence on purchasing beacuse of past experiences , I believe that it has more affect since the methods are changed a lot. so I assert that advertisement has become more succesful in the recent years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and presenting a clear position throughout. The introduction outlines the two arguments and sides with the view that advertising successfully influences consumer behaviour. Main body paragraphs examine both perspectives, such as the argument that common ads are ignored due to poor past experiences, and the counter-argument regarding the power of modern influencers and sports stars. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the discussion on consumer skepticism relies on a single brief example about buying a suit, which remains slightly under-developed. To reach a higher level, all main arguments would need more extensive elaboration, deeper analysis, and fully supported examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical organization. Information and ideas are grouped adequately into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Although both views', 'Those who believe', and 'On the other hand'. However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is not always completely clear. For instance, the transition between sentences within the second body paragraph could flow more naturally. The half-band level is achieved because the overall structure is clear and progresses logically throughout, meeting the core requirements of the lower band while showing strong structural awareness, though it falls short of the flexible and seamless referencing required for the band above.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'consumer's buying behaviour', 'billboards', and 'substaintial'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that reflect a restricted command of collocation and precision. Examples include 'saling products' instead of selling, 'proper attention' instead of adequate attention, 'biu gain' instead of buy again, and the spelling mistake 'substaintial'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writer from achieving a higher score. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their range of less common vocabulary and ensuring greater accuracy in spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional-like clauses and subordinate clauses. There are some grammatical errors in punctuation, verb forms, and articles, such as 'advertisement have nothing to do' where subject-verb agreement fails, 'why someone buy the same product' where word order in an indirect question is incorrect, and missing articles in phrases like 'in conclusion, although there are a few reason'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate better control over complex grammatical structures, particularly regarding tense consistency and clause construction.
