IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The question of whether advertisement influence people to purchase something or it is considered a boring way as not all people are paying attention towards it has sparked a debatable issue.Although nobody is interested in it, i believe that it can influence people more effectively.
On the one hand, advertising is extremely successful at persuading masses to buy things. This is because nowadays, advertisements are made in eye catching way that easily catch the attention of people since different kinds of things are used to make it more encouraging such as famous actor and actress usually promote the product through marketing which eventually encourages people to buy things without thinking a twice. Hence, advertisement often proves advantageous to influence people.
On the other hand, some people believe that advertisement is so common that people are less likely to find it interested as advertisements are too long that is why majority of people prefer to quit or skip it no matter whether it is showing some important information to them .Moreover, individuals are also feeling monotonous by watching similar kind of advertisements which are no longer curious for them. For instance, mostly people do not like to watch advertisement while watching their favourite televison shows as they think that it acts a distraction or disrupt them from watching.
To conclude, no doubt both the points have their own justification, however in my perspective advertisement proves lucrative to take the attention of individuals regarding any kind of product..

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the position is not always fully clear, and the ideas presented are somewhat limited and under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions that advertisements use eye-catching methods like famous actors, this point is not extended with specific examples or deep explanation. Furthermore, the response is 246 words long, meaning the minimum length requirement of 250 words is not met. To reach the next band, the writer needs to ensure the word count requirement is satisfied and extend the supporting arguments with more thorough explanations and relevant details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. However, the progression is occasionally disrupted, and cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used to signal shifts, but referencing and logical links between sentences can be repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'advertisement' or 'things' without smooth substitution. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion needs to be managed more skillfully with a wider range of cohesive ties to ensure a smoother flow of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic meaning of the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'advantageous', 'monotonous', and 'lucrative', but noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form occur throughout the text. Examples include 'advertisement influence' instead of 'advertisements influence', 'thinking a twice' instead of 'thinking twice', and 'find it interested' instead of 'find it interesting'. Additionally, there are minor spelling and capitalization issues, such as 'televison' and the lowercase 'i'. To improve lexical resource, the writer should focus on accurate word forms, natural collocations, and reducing repetitive phrasing by building a more varied repertoire of terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate multi-clause structures such as conditional and concessive clauses using words like 'Although' and 'no matter whether'. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to errors in grammar and punctuation. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement ('advertisement influence' instead of 'advertisements influence'), articles ('a debatable issue', 'a distraction'), and prepositions or clause patterns ('act a distraction or disrupt them'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader. Greater control over grammatical structures and error-free complex sentences is necessary for a higher band.
