IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Introduction
some people believe advertisement as the most effective way for convincing us to buy their things. Others consider it as a common way for advertising and people no longer attract to it. I believe advertisment is still really important for pursuing customers and increases the chance of buying the product.
Body
People who believe advartisement is most successful way for persuading customers have a previos good history and achieved success in their advertisement. Achieving success in adverstising depends upon the method they use for the specific target audience. For example, advertisers use different methods and tools for young and old people respectively. Successful people in advertisement have experts who knows best attractive ways to use at specific time for targeted audience. In my opinion, if people use proper strategies for adverstisement, they are more likely to pursue more customers than who does'nt advertise.
On the other way, people who believe advertisment as common way are right in some sense but they does'nt have any alternative way better than advertisement. In advertisement some way become common but still people use different new methods to attract customers. Getting customers attentions depends upon ways we use for different types of customers. Young people gets more attracted on socail media platforms and using celebraties or superstars to convince them. Older people gets more attracted to discounts and offers.
Conclusion
In conclusion, advertisment is still extremely effective way for advertisment but it depends upon ways and techniques you use attract people based on their interest and age.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing a personal opinion, which sits comfortably within the expectations for partial task coverage. The writer presents relevant ideas, such as target audiences and social media strategies, but these points are underdeveloped and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on target audiences in the body paragraphs lacks specific examples or deeper explanation, leading to a tendency to generalise. The position is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion, yet the supporting arguments remain limited and require further extension and logical development to move toward higher achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some basic organisation with clear paragraph divisions for the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences can feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively and mechanically, such as the repeated phrases 'people who believe' and 'gets more attracted'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example in sentences like 'In advertisement some way become common', which disrupts the reading experience. To achieve higher bands, the writer needs to employ a wider and more sophisticated range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message of the essay. There are noticeable lexical errors and issues with word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text, such as 'advertisment', 'pursuing' instead of 'persuading', 'previos', 'socail', and 'celebraties'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted lexical range. When the writer attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in collocation and form become evident. To improve, the student must expand their vocabulary range, focus on correct word forms, and pay close attention to accurate spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentence patterns alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('experts who knows', 'people gets', 'way become', 'she does'nt have', 'it does'nt advertise'), missing articles, and incorrect prepositions. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. While a mix of sentence types is attempted, the high frequency of basic grammatical inaccuracies prevents the text from achieving a higher level of control and precision.
