IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE DEBATE REGARDING PROMOTION OF PRODUCTS THROUGH ADVERTISING FEATURES TWO CONTRASTING PERSPECTIVES. SEVERAL PEOPLE HOLD THE VIEW THAT ADVERTISING IS SUCCESSFUL AT ENCOURAGING CONSUMERS TO PURCHASE THINGS. ON THE CONTRARY, OTHERS CONTEND THAT PEOPLE DONT PAY ATTENTION BECAUSE IT IS PREVALENT. PRIOR TO PRESENTING MY OWN PERSPECTIVE, BOTH SIDES WILL BE ANALYSED IN THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPHS.

TO BEGIN WITH, SUPPORTERS OF FIRST VIEW BELIEVE THAT INDIVIDUALS GET MOTIVATED TO BUY THINGS WHEN THEY SEE THEIR FAVOURATE CELEBRITIES AND INFLUENCERS. FOR INSTANCE, MANY INDUSTRIES HIRES PROMINENT FIGURES FOR PROMOTING THEIR UNHEALTHY PRODUCTS LIKE CIGARATTES, ALCOHOL ETC. CUSTOMERS BUY SUCH THINGS BECAUSE OF THEIR IDOLS ARE PROMOTING. MOREOVER, BIG FIRMS ALSO MAKE CREATIVE AND SOPHISTICATED BILLBOARDS AND CUSTOMERS OFTEN GETS ATTRACTED TOWARDS IT. MANY COMPANIES WANT TO SELL THEIR PRODUCTS FASTLY SO THEY FOCUS ON CLAIMING SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNTS ON THEIR PRODUCTS WHILE ADVERTISING SO PEOPLE ENDED UP BYUNG UNNECESSARY THINGS.

HOWEVER, TECHNOLOGY IS DEVELOPING RAPIDLY WHICH FACILIATES SHOPKEEPERS TO PROMOTE THEIR PRODUCTS WITHOUT SPENDING SINGLE MONEY ON HIRING PEOPLE, IT LEADS TO WIDESPREAD USE OF INTERNET FOR PROMOTING THEIR SHOPS AND PRODUCTS THROUGH ADVERTISEMENTS AND USERS FREQUENTLY SEE THOSE ADVERTISEMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS SO THATS WHY THEY OVERLOOK AND DO NOT GIVE MUCH IMPORTANCE THINKING IT IS NOW VERY COMMON.

TO SUM UP, ALTHOUGH BOTH THE SIDES OFFER REASONABLE ARGUMENTS, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT ADVERTISEMENTS PLAYS A VITAL ROLE BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO BUY PRODUCTS WHICH THEY ARE NOT AWARE AND WHEN CONSUMERS BUY PRODUCTS, IT WILL CONTRIBUTE IN GROWING OVERALL ECONOMY OF THE NATION.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the first body paragraph attempts to explain why advertising persuades people through celebrity endorsement and discounts, the second body paragraph on why people ignore ads is somewhat repetitive and less fully developed. For instance, the point about technology facilitating promotion could be expanded with clearer examples to achieve a higher level of extension.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main idea. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'to begin with', 'moreover', and 'however', though some linking is slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional transitions between sentences feel a bit abrupt, preventing the flow from reaching a more sophisticated level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'prevalent', 'prominent figures', and 'substantial discounts'. However, there are several word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'favoureate', 'hires' instead of 'hire', 'fastly', and 'byung', which reflect slips in spelling and lexical control. Despite these errors, meaning is communicated without major difficulty, fitting the threshold for this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and varied clause structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'customers often gets attracted', missing articles before singular nouns, and a very long run-on sentence in the third paragraph. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the overall meaning of the response.
