IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is no doubt that advertising has become very necessary for commercial needs in every aspect in society, we find it in every and each social media nowadays. Neverthless, is it really a successful way to encourage people buy things or is it too common to pay attention for it anymore?
Advirtising has always proven its necessity and success in influencing people's purchasing decisions. Companies use attractive images, creative videos, emotional feedbacks and social media influences to make their product admirable among buyers. In addition, modern digital advertising has allowed companies to target specific groups of consumers according to their age, gender and online behavious. For example, someone who frequently searches for winter clothing style may repeatedly see advertisements of long boots, trending coats or warm woolen shirts. This personalised approch can increase the likehood of making a purchase.
Furthermore, advertising can introduce consumers to products they did not previously know about, which may influence their choices.
On the other hand, the enormous amount of advertisements shown everyday may have reduced its impact. Consumers get usually exposed to numerous ads on social media, television, public trasport and websites. As a result, many people have grown interest to ignoring them, particularly when they interrupt content they are interested in. For instant, internet users may may immediately skip video advertisements or use software that blocks online ads. Moreover, people are often more sceptical of advertising because they understand that its primary purpose is to persuade them to spend money.
In my opinion, although people may ignore many advertisements because of their frequency, advertising remains highly influential when it is well-designed and targeted at the right audience. The fact that companies continue to invest enormous amounts of money in advertising suggests that it can still affect consumer behaviour. Therefore, advertising has not become ineffective; rather, consumers have become more selective about which advertisements they notice.
In conclusion, advertising can persuade people through emotional appeals, targeted messages and product information, while its widespread presence can also cause people to ignore it. I believe that advertising remains successful, particularly when it is relevant and carefully targeted.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and presenting a clear personal opinion. For example, the student acknowledges the argument that advertising is too common and ignored, while also arguing that it remains successful when well-designed. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive; the body paragraphs present relevant points regarding targeted marketing and consumer skepticism, but certain arguments could be extended further with deeper explanation to reach the highest bands. The position is maintained consistently from the introduction through the body paragraphs and into the conclusion, showing a solid command of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the first view, the second view, the personal opinion, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect sentences, such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, such as in the abrupt transitions between sentences or minor issues with cohesive phrasing like 'grown interest to ignoring them', which hint at the characteristics of the next band where cohesion becomes more fluid and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'purchasing decisions', 'personalised approach', and 'sceptical'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and spelling mistakes throughout the text that reflect a limited resource. For instance, spelling errors like 'Neverthless' instead of 'nevertheless', 'Advirtising', 'behavious', 'approch', 'likehood', and 'trasport' appear. Additionally, collocation and word choice issues occur, such as 'grown interest to ignoring them' instead of 'grown accustomed to ignoring them', and 'emotional feedbacks' instead of 'emotional appeals'. These inaccuracies occasionally hinder precision but do not completely impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures appropriately in sentences like 'someone who frequently searches for winter clothing style may repeatedly see advertisements...' Grammatical errors and punctuation slips are present, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include punctuation errors in comma splices or run-on structures in the opening sentences, and prepositional or structural inaccuracies such as 'pay attention for it' instead of 'pay attention to it' and 'For instant' instead of 'For instance'. There are also minor subject-verb or article slips, which place the grammar firmly in a mixed category where simple structures are handled well while complex attempts contain occasional flaws.
