IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Different views persist when discussing about advertising. A certain section of society believes advertising has the capability to convince us to purchase the advertised items. The other section believes that we do not pay heed to advertising anymore because of its enormous existence. I am of the former view and think that everyone has their unique approach to advertise, enabling them to reach the targeted audience.

To begin with, the former view states the convincing power of advertising to sell items. Advertising done by celebrities has always remained a great approach in persuading people. Their fans definitely make it a point to visit the stores or online websites to purchase the advertised items. Advertising also highlights the special discounts for a limited period. This really attracts the customers as they unlock great deals. For example, a customer saves a lot of money when shopping for clothes in a 50% off Navratri Sale at Pantaloons. As a result, the advertised discounts and deals become a huge boon.

The latter view states that people no longer pay any heed to advertising because of its gigantic existence. Nowadays, numerous brands are available for a single category in this competitive market. This increases the presence of the advertising industry as a whole. For example, customers have tonnes of options to choose a television company, but find all the advertisements alike. Consequently, the advertsing industry is losing its effectiveness.

I am of the former view and think that everyone has their unique selling proposition in advertising. Quoting an example, a company advertising taking in account of the current trends is likely to reach the targeted audience through several platforms. Therefore, advertising will always be relevant, if the ideas are different.

In conclusion, whether the society believes advertising as a boon or a bane, I believe if you flow with the current scenario and can anticipate the future, then advertising is likely to bear fruits for you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that advertising successfully persuades buyers and that it is too common to be noticed—alongside a clear personal position. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, while celebrity endorsements and discounts are mentioned as persuasive tools in the second paragraph, the explanation remains somewhat superficial and relies on generalized assertions rather than deeper elaboration. Similarly, the reasoning regarding market saturation is introduced with examples like television companies, but the argument lacks comprehensive exploration. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand further on the core arguments with more developed explanations and specific, well-fleshed-out examples rather than brief mentions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas across paragraphs, meeting the expectations for a solid score. The writing is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs addressing each view and the writer's opinion, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'The latter view', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or formulaic, and referencing could be smoother, as seen in the transition phrases used to introduce viewpoints. To achieve the next band, the writer should integrate more natural and fluid cohesive links between sentences and ensure that paragraph transitions feel organic rather than rigid.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate ideas about advertising, consumer behavior, and market competition clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and phraseology, such as 'unique selling proposition', 'targeted audience', and 'gigantic existence'. However, some word choices and collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'enormous existence' instead of 'ubiquity' or 'pervasiveness', and 'discussing about' which mixes register. Spelling is generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, employing sophisticated lexical items and natural collocations with greater control and fewer awkward phrasings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing the ability to construct compound and multi-clause sentences such as 'Advertising also highlights the special discounts for a limited period, which really attracts the customers as they unlock great deals.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with prepositions and referencing, such as 'discussing about' and 'taking in account' instead of 'taking into account'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without difficulty. To reach a higher level, the writer should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate a tighter control over grammatical patterns, articles, and prepositional usage.
