IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
A few individuals say that advertising is highly successful at convincing people to buy things. Others say argue that, it is common and most of the peple no longer draw attention to it. From my perspective, there both the arguments have their own justifications and i believe that, advertising is successful at making people purchase products.
on one hand, advertising is pursuading people to buy products because, the strategy of the marketing plays a vital role for making advertisements. For instance, the modern people of this society prefer to showcase their purchases and for this reason advertising is very attractive, since it convinces people to make bigger purchases. Furthermore, advertising creates a perspective in an individual's mind that owning a particualr thing can appreciate their wealth and respect. For example, owning a few precious products may uplift the value of a person. So, advertisements creates a delusion in a person to make that advertised purchase
On the other hand, advertising is very common and there a million other things to focus on. For instance, a person will not pay attention to certain something which will not please him. In modern days, there are alot of things which distract people and a particular adverstisement may not attract an individual. Furthermore, In this digital world, traditions billboards and posters will not impact a person to make a purchase. Because, most of the people are not noticing the billboards and even if they do, they do not give it a thought.
To conclude with, advertising is more successful for a certain range of people and along with that, not every person is being influenced because of advertisements. In my opinion, advertisements are majorly convinsing their audience to but things because of many on going trends, most of people are trying to make a purchase

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the first view is supported by points about social status and perceived value, the arguments on the second view remain somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding distractions and the irrelevance of traditional billboards. Some ideas are under-developed, such as the claim that modern people prefer to showcase purchases without fully linking it back to advertising effectiveness. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need more extension and deeper explanation with more precise examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each view, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different perspectives. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as the transitional phrase "To conclude with" and awkward referencing like "there both the arguments". The flow of ideas between sentences occasionally lacks smoothness, which prevents the essay from achieving a more advanced level of logical progression. Improving the variety and natural integration of cohesive devices would enhance the overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases like "persuading", "delusion", and "appreciate their wealth". However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, spelling, and word form throughout the text, such as "peple" instead of people, "pursuading" instead of persuading, "particualr" instead of particular, and "convinsing" instead of convincing. Additionally, expressions like "draw attention to it" and "traditional billboards" show some awkwardness in collocation. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to the current level. More precision and careful proofreading are needed for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent structural errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include comma splices and awkward phrasing such as "Others say argue that, it is common" and "there are a million other things". Issues with articles and prepositions also appear, such as missing or incorrect articles in "traditions billboards" and "most of people". While these errors rarely completely impede understanding, they are frequent enough to affect readability and signal that grammar control is limited to the current band level. Greater accuracy in complex sentence construction is required to progress.
