IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many argue that advertising is a very successful way to let people buy goods. Meanwhile, others believe that people have outgrown watching ads as they have become so common these days. I believe that the world is advancing at an accelerating pace, thereby people tend to ignore and pay no attention to common advertisment.
On the one hand, advertising products attract audiences through its eye-catching and innovative styles. This is because people are interested in channels and shows that are broadcasting new and upgraded features. Consumers are looking for things that bring ease and comfort in their life and if companies keep these things in their mind while making ads, they can easily persuade people to buy the product. For example, Apple upgrade their iPhones each year with new colors and high-tech features when advertising in their big event, which persuade many people around the world to purchase this phone. Although it attracts an individual to buy readily, I believe it does not work in a long run as people easily get fed up or bored by the same strategy.
On the other hand, people are so caught up in their daily life and chores that they pay no attention towards advertisement. The primary reason is that companies are using the same idea constantly and not appreciating the interest of their audiences. As a consequence, people often lose their interest or divert their attention to their daily routine. For instance, Youtube has launched skip button for people who want to skip advertisements as majority of people were wanting this feature for a long time. I believe this school of thought is preferrable as it is not anticipating any benefit in a person's life which is full of other essential responsibilities to fulfil.
In conclusion, a striking and provoking advertisement can attract individuals to buy a product, however, I believe that individuals have very short span of attention and a common advertising usually causes people to divert or get bored.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and presenting a clear personal opinion throughout the essay, which aligns with the requirements of the task. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, preventing a higher score. For example, the first body paragraph presents a relevant argument regarding eye-catching styles and uses the Apple example, but the explanation of why it does not work in the long run is somewhat brief. Similarly, the second body paragraph introduces the valid point about daily routines and YouTube skip buttons, but the reasoning could be extended further. The position is clear from the introduction and is consistently maintained through to the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas from introduction to body paragraphs and finally to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, with each main body paragraph focusing on a distinct view. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', which helps guide the reader through the argument. However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear. For instance, the transition between sentences within paragraphs could flow more naturally without relying heavily on repetitive sentence starters, which reflects the characteristics of this level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and demonstrates an attempt to use less common items, such as 'accelerating pace', 'innovative styles', and 'essential responsibilities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocations, such as 'let people buy goods' instead of 'persuade people to purchase goods', and 'advertisment' which contains a minor spelling error. Other phrasing such as 'in a long run' (should be 'in the long run') and 'preferrable' also show slight lexical slips. Despite these errors, the range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and complex clauses, such as using 'although' and 'as' clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'Apple upgrade' instead of 'Apples upgrade' or 'Apple upgrades', missing articles in phrases like 'in a long run', and preposition usage such as 'attention towards advertisement' instead of 'attention to advertisements'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning of the sentences remains clear to the reader, which fits the expected standard.
