IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
People use to spent there time on social media a lot. When a person is free so they pick up there cell phone and go straight to scroll thier social media app, and there they use to find adds which usually pops up when they are seeing any video or some important post. Those adds are of some products which are on trend or products which are just launched by some company or a person.
There are some people who say advertisement play a crucial role in customers buying a product. It is thier belief and they are usually stuck in this. They thought when an adds apears in a mobile phone, this made people to follow to the website for buying the product. They also think if a person saw an add of some product on television, then on thier mobile phones, and also on bill boards on road. This make them to think about that product continuously and ends them buying that product.
There is also the belief of other proportion of people who thinks advertisement is not so important nowadays, as adds are normal, and do not impact a person very much. They think in there way as people are always seeing the adds, so they don't find it important. They just skip the add on any online platform, if the add is not of thier interest. They are always seeing the same advertisement repeatedly, which don't make any sense to them and irritate them. They think that people use to buy product by looking at the quality of product not just seeing the add.
In my view, the advertisement play a crucial step for a successful business. Advertisement is the first step which attract the buyer to buy your product. It make them look what type of product a person is selling and help them in making decision to buy them. It also depends how attractive your marketing, how good the advertisement is so a non buyer could also attract to it.
All in all, it can be said that, advertisement is important for selling your business and this thing could not be ignored. The advertisement should be according to the product you are sellig so more buyers could attract to it, and make them to have your product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing a personal opinion, placing it in the mid-range of achievement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the first body paragraph outlines the view that advertising successfully persuades buyers, but the explanation relies heavily on simple repetition of ideas rather than extending them with specific examples or deep analysis. Similarly, the counterargument is introduced but lacks fully articulated support. The writer's position is discernible in the conclusion and final paragraphs, yet the overall exploration of the prompt remains basic and under-developed, preventing a more comprehensive evaluation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some overall organization with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, the two opposing views, the personal opinion, and the conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear progression throughout the text, and transitions between sentences feel mechanical or abrupt. Cohesive devices are used repeatedly and often inaccurately, such as the frequent reliance on phrases like 'There are some people who say' and 'There is also the belief of other proportion of people'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with pronoun usage ('this made people to follow', 'this thing could not be ignored'), which disrupts the logical flow and makes the overall progression feel somewhat repetitive rather than advancing smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common terms such as 'crucial role' and 'marketing', but these are accompanied by frequent noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling. Examples of lexical issues include 'adds' instead of 'ads', 'thier' instead of 'their', 'sellig' instead of 'selling', and awkward phrasing like 'non buyer could also attract to it'. Spelling mistakes and incorrect word forms appear throughout the essay, which causes some difficulty for the reader and restricts the lexical score to a basic level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic clause patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as 'It also depends how attractive your marketing, how good the advertisement is so a non buyer could also attract to it.' There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement throughout the text, including phrases like 'People use to spent there time', 'advertisement play a crucial role', and 'people thinks'. Punctuation is also erratic at times. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, keeping the grammatical accuracy at a restricted level.
