Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing an opinion, which is a solid feature of a mid-level band. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For example, the first body paragraph touches upon social media trends and creative graphics like memes, but the explanation remains slightly brief and relies on general assertions rather than deep elaboration. The second body paragraph about irritation and repetition also introduces relevant points regarding fatigue and wasted money, such as the example of the 'Fit jet Spinner', though some ideas are slightly under-developed or vague. The overall stance is visible throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, but further extension and depth in supporting arguments are required to reach higher tiers of performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the writing into an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'Discussing the former view', 'In addition to this', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive in its formulaic transitions. Referencing is generally functional, but occasional awkward phrasing creates slight bumps in the logical flow. To achieve a fully higher band, the integration of cohesive devices needs to be smoother and less predictable, ensuring seamless progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic arguments about advertising. There are several attempts to use less common items and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'persuading', 'curious', and 'repetitive'. However, the range is limited and noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation occur throughout the text, including 'adervertising', 'containg', 'dailouges', 'wasteage', 'unusal', 'irreruglar', and 'successfull'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the score because precision and flexibility are lacking. Expanding the range of natural collocations and ensuring accurate spelling are key steps for improvement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional-like justifications, such as 'by watching new advertise hy might get attracted and go to buy such thing'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and sentence structure, including missing articles, incorrect pluralisation, subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'people does not pay attention'), and faulty prepositions within grammatical patterns. While the meaning is generally retrievable despite these mistakes, the presence of frequent errors in basic and complex structures means that simple sentences are not consistently error-free. Greater control over grammatical accuracy and a wider repertoire of error-free complex structures are needed to progress.
