IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many individuals believe that advertisements are playing an extremely powerful role in purchasing things, while others argue that they do not give attention to these advertisements because they are already common. This essay will discuss both the views before explaining why I believe that new ways of marketing things might attract people's attention.

On the one hand, many people think that advertisements are playing a successful role at persuading them to buy new things. This is because advancements in technology and different ways of marketing could encourage them to buy things online. There are various social media platforms which are used for advertisements of several products, consequently influencing individuals to spend randomly. Moreover, Some websites use very creative designs for their products marketing which are quite attractive for people to buy abruptly. For example, if any thing goes popular on the internet, people might want that thing because of its hype and reviews. Therefore, these advertising agencies have a great impact on people's lives and their ways of buying things.

On the other hand, some argue the popularity of advertising agencies is not attractive for them. This could be possible because they are bored of traditional advertisements which do not get their attention. They believe that these advertisements are just used as a source of earning for the manufacturers. As a result, they are not very keen about these marketing products and avoid spending on random things which are widely advertised throughout the channels.

In conclusion, some people believe that attractive and mindful advertisements have a great role in their lives, while others think that these are the common ways of earning and not influence them to buy things. However, I largely believe that the new ways of marketing can influence people to buy things, while improving traditional ways of advertisements could attract people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that advertisements successfully persuade buyers and that they are too common to matter—and you provide your own position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the first body paragraph touches on social media and creative designs, the second body paragraph and your personal opinion remain somewhat repetitive and under-developed. For example, stating simply that traditional advertisements do not get attention lacks specific elaboration. To reach a higher level, you should extend your arguments with deeper explanations or more robust examples rather than relying on general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. You make use of standard cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the logical progression of your ideas. To fully secure a higher band, the use of referencing and cohesive ties could be smoother and less mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases feel slightly formulaic, and occasional referencing words like 'these' or 'they' lack precise clarity in connecting back to their antecedents across sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as 'advancements in technology', 'influencing individuals to spend randomly', and 'hype and reviews'. Communication is never impeded by your word choices. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as saying advertisements 'are playing an extremely powerful role in purchasing things' instead of in *persuading* people, or using 'marketing products' instead of *marketing campaigns*. To improve, focus on refining word choice and natural collocations to ensure greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You successfully combine simple and complex sentence forms throughout your essay, using relative clauses and conditional structures like 'if any thing goes popular on the internet'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions or slight prepositions slips, including 'discuss both the views' (unnecessary article) and 'any thing' (should be one word: *anything*). These minor mistakes do not impede communication. The presence of a mix of structures with occasional errors places your grammar firmly at this level. To move further, aim to increase the proportion of entirely error-free complex sentences and polish your control over articles and word boundaries.
