IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think that advertising is successful at persuading us to buy new things, in contrast, others think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. This essay will discuss both prespectives, along with my own opinion in favour of the former point of view in upcoming paragraphs with a relevant conclusion.

To commence with, the former prespective, advertising is extremely successful at getting people to buy new things, as watching adverts creates curiousity in the minds of individuals. For example, families watching television shows or online streaming services at home come across various commercials, these create a sense of familiarity in the consumer's mind. Thus, when the consumer ventures into a supermarket isle, and sees the same product, it triggers a sense of trust, leading the consumer to buy the familiar product. But, raising sales depends directly on the quality of the advertisment, as a poorly orchestrated advert will fail to appeal consumers. Nevertheless, looking at the latter prespective, advertising has become substantially common in the modern world of technology. To elaborate it, competition has severely increased in recent years, and this tends to confuse consumers about which products to buy and which to avoid. Apart from this, persistant and recurring commercials can annoy customers, causing some people to ignore the product completely. For a relevant example, modern television services have a surprising amount of ad-breaks, when compared to the past, this tends to desensitize people's prespective of ad content, causing a person to pay no heed to the showcased products, thus, defeating the purpose of advertising in the first place.

However, my personal opinion stands with the success of advertisment, if an advert is creatively and uniquely constructed, it can still bring a high amount of revenue to the company, and appease the customers into buying more products. From my own experience, i have seen a fairly large amount of commercials, and the best products and commercials instill a feeling of curiousity and familiarity within me.

In conclusion, after discussing both prespectives, it can be inferred that advertising has its advantages with a few drawbacks, and can be subjective based on the person viewing the advert.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for advertising’s persuasive power, so the response fully covers the task at a basic level. The explanation that repeated exposure creates familiarity and trust is relevant, and the example of seeing a product in a supermarket supports it. You also explain how excessive advertising can confuse or irritate consumers. To strengthen the response further, develop the second view with a more specific explanation of when people ignore adverts, and make the conclusion reinforce your own position rather than ending with the broad claim that the effect is subjective. Your opinion is present, but its support is less developed than the discussion of familiarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph covering both views, a paragraph for your opinion, and a conclusion. The progression is generally understandable, and linking expressions such as “Nevertheless,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal shifts. However, the main body combines the two opposing views in one long paragraph, making the transition between them less clear. Some connectors are also mechanical or awkward, including “To commence with” and “To elaborate it.” Several sentences are overloaded with linked clauses, particularly the example about television ad-breaks. Use separate paragraphs for the two views and your opinion, and make each sentence carry one main step in the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “commercials,” “consumer,” “desensitize,” and “revenue,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the former point of view.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “creates curiousity” would be better expressed as “arouses curiosity,” while “appease the customers into buying” does not convey the intended meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “prespectives,” “advertisment,” “curiousity,” and “persistant” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and proofread spelling; avoid repeating “perspective” and “consumer” when a clearer alternative is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“if an advert is creatively and uniquely constructed”) and clauses explaining cause and effect. Meaning remains understandable, but some sentence structures and punctuation are not well controlled. For example, “families … come across various commercials, these create…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. The sentence beginning “For a relevant example” also runs through several ideas without clear punctuation. There are smaller grammatical issues in “appeal consumers” (the verb needs an object marker) and “my personal opinion stands with the success,” where the construction is awkward. Break long sentences into clearer units and check clause boundaries, articles, and verb patterns.
