IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
While some believe advertisements successfully encourage people to purchase products, others argue advertisements have been so normalized that they are no longer worth paying attention to. This essay will examine both perspectives before I present my view that advertising plays a crucial role in influencing people to buy things.
The constant bombardment of product promotions has led the public to ignore them entirely. Historically, social media had minimal influence on consumers. However, sudden emergence of digital platforms has forced brands to advertise their products on different digital platforms like, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. The promotions keep popping up constantly that they are no longer important, and people do not pay much attention to them. As a result, individuals who frequently utilise these digital sites often purchase a premium version of these applications to escape those advertisements. For example, many websites have introduced Ad-free versions, so people are not exposed to promotional images and videos.
Conversely, in this contemporary age, celebrities have set the ideal benchmark of life, which has helped a number of businesses to meet their annual sale targets. This is because the public usually adores the lifestyle of famous personalities and the brand products they endorse. Many brands hire influencers to promote their goods because it effectively helps them to market their items all over social media. For instance, for many years, global sportswear giant Nike has been utilising Cristiano Ronaldo in their advertising campaigns which eventually boosts its annual sales that help them generate revenue in the billions.
In conclusion, while it is true that frequent exposure to advertisements has caused alot of them to be avoided by people, I still believe that marketing campaigns which involve famous influencers are imperative in successfully inducing a mass public to buy products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction says advertising influences purchasing, and the conclusion reinforces this position. The discussion of ad saturation is relevant, with the example of people paying for ad-free applications; the Nike and Cristiano Ronaldo example also supports the persuasive power of endorsements. However, the first view is developed more as a consequence of excessive exposure than as a direct explanation of why people stop noticing advertising. The claim that social media had minimal influence historically is not clearly connected to that argument, and the second view relies heavily on celebrity endorsement without exploring other ways advertising persuades consumers. Develop each side more evenly and explain the link between each example and the view it supports more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each perspective, and a conclusion that returns to your opinion. Signposting such as “Conversely,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the central position remains consistent. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The move from the historical influence of social media to the sudden emergence of platforms does not clearly establish why advertisements are ignored. In the second body paragraph, the shift from celebrities setting an ideal lifestyle to businesses meeting sales targets could be explained more explicitly. There is also some repetition of “digital platforms” and “advertisements.” Strengthen the cause-and-effect links and use referencing or varied transitions to make connections more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “product promotions,” “premium version,” “endorse,” and “advertising campaigns.” These choices help communicate both the saturation and persuasive-power arguments, and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more formal or less common phrasing, such as “constant bombardment” and “inducing a mass public,” but some combinations sound unnatural or imprecise. “Inducing a mass public to buy products” would be more naturally expressed as persuading consumers to purchase products. “Annual sale targets” is also less idiomatic than “annual sales targets,” while “alot” should be written as “a lot.” Aim for accurate collocations and avoid wording that sounds overly elaborate when a direct expression would be clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “which has helped a number of businesses” and a reason clause beginning “This is because.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “the promotions keep popping up constantly that they are no longer important,” the relationship between the clauses is not correctly formed; use a result structure such as “so frequently that people no longer notice them.” The phrase “like, YouTube” has an unnecessary comma, and “which eventually boosts its annual sales that help them generate” has an unclear chain of clauses and a mismatch between “sales” and “help.” Review clause linking, agreement, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
