IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some people believe that advertising is very effective at convincing us to buy products. Other feel that because we see ads everywhere, we simply ignore them. Although their are too many ads nowadays, I believe that they are still strong enough to influence what people purchase.
On the one hand, many people ignore commercials because they are exposed to them constantly throughout the day. From social media feeds to billboards on the street, advertisement appear everywhere. As a result, consumer experience ad fatigue and actively try to avoid them by using ad blockers, skipping video commercials, or simply turning their attention elsewhere. Consequently, traditional advertising often loses its ability to capture public attention.
On the other hand, modern advertising techniques are so clever that they still successfully drive people to buy things. Companies now use targeted ads based on personal browsing data, showed products that directly align with citizen interests and needs. Furthermore, collaborating with popular social media influencers makes promotional content feel more authentic and convincing. Therefore, even people try to ignore generic ads, strategic marketing continues to persuade them to make purchase.
In conclusion, while the constant presence of commercials can lead to ad fatigue and cause many people to ignore traditional marketing, modern advertising techniques remains exceptionally effective. By leveraging personalized data and influencer endorsements, companies continue to successfully shape consumer spending habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: advertising can be ignored when it is ubiquitous, yet modern methods still influence purchases. The examples of ad blockers, skipped commercials, targeted advertising and influencers are relevant and help explain each side. However, the first view is developed more as a list of avoidance behaviours than as an explanation of how widespread advertising reduces attention, while the second view receives a clearer explanation of why it remains persuasive. The conclusion restates your position effectively. The response is 25 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space for fuller development. Add a specific example or explanation to each body paragraph, especially the point about how targeted ads lead to purchases.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, with one paragraph for each view and a concise conclusion. Its progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the discussion’s direction clear. You also use cause-and-effect links, including “As a result” and “Consequently,” to connect ideas. To make the cohesion more flexible, avoid relying so heavily on explicit transition phrases and develop links between claims and examples within each paragraph. For instance, explain how influencer promotions feel authentic and why that can overcome consumers’ tendency to ignore generic advertisements. There is also a missing space after “day.”, which slightly interrupts the presentation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “ad fatigue,” “targeted ads,” “personal browsing data,” “influencers,” and “consumer spending habits.” These choices show an attempt to use precise language beyond basic terms, and the meaning remains clear. Some word choices and forms are inaccurate or less natural, however: “advertisement appear” should be “advertisements appear,” “consumer experience ad fatigue” needs a plural subject, and “make purchase” is better expressed as “make a purchase” or “make purchases.” “Citizen interests” is also an awkward choice in this context; “consumers’ interests” is more appropriate. Greater control of collocations and plural forms would make the vocabulary more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concessive opening with “Although” and a contrastive conclusion beginning “while.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Other feel” needs subject–verb agreement (“Others feel”), and “their are” should be “there are.” In “Companies now use targeted ads … showed products,” the participle should be “showing”; “even people try to ignore” needs a construction such as “even when people try to ignore”; and “techniques remains” should be “techniques remain.” The missing space after “day.” and the extra space after “In conclusion,” also affect punctuation and presentation. Proofread agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries while retaining your varied structures.
