IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern world, role of advertisement in gaining sales remains a great discourse in public. While some say promotion helps brands to market their unique selling points that causes high sales, others believe that because of too much ads in televisions or social media platforms, public stoped making buying decisions by the influence of commercials. In my opinion, advertising information about product or service guarantees an impressive number of customers.

Promotional content is very common nowadays and most people skip the ads in the first 5 seconds of it or change the channel. Primarily, in social media like youtube, the sponsored content often occurs while there is another video content is being consumed by user. It is moslty irritating to face disturbance in the form of such ad breaks. So people instantly skip these videos whenever they get a chance. This does not help brand much to advertise their product meaningfully.

Having said that, advertising still helps businesses to find good customers. Firstly, the social platforms are becoming smarter day by day. The algorithms is designed in such a way to segregate users based on their needs and demands. This segregation helps to stream the advertisement to the person who is in need of such product or service. Secondly, platforms like meta provide massive information to the businesses about their campaign performance in terms of who showed interest in the product, what are the demographics of that person. Such information helps to identify perfect target audience and craft quality of things and script for campaign according to the perspective of the target audience.

In the conclusion, people usually avoid commercials but when they know about the potential of things in terms of adding value in their life, they usually persuates to buy things. I suggest carefully propagating the main point of item in first five seconds may increase the sales ever furthur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the opening argues that advertising can increase sales, while the first body paragraph explains why people ignore frequent ads. Your discussion of targeted advertising and campaign data is relevant support for the opposing view. This meets the task well overall, and your position is visible again in the conclusion. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the point that people skip ads is illustrated mainly through social media interruptions, while the benefits of advertising receive more detailed explanation. The conclusion also shifts towards advice about how businesses should advertise rather than fully weighing the two views. Develop the first side further and make the final judgement more explicit to strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Having said that” and “Firstly” help show the relationship between ideas. The progression within the paragraph about advertising effectiveness—from algorithms to campaign data—is particularly clear. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the first body paragraph relies on a narrow chain of examples without a broader concluding point. References such as “This segregation” and “Such information” are understandable, though the latter paragraph would benefit from clearer links between the data collected and the resulting increase in sales. Use transitions more selectively and make each paragraph’s central point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “unique selling points,” “sponsored content,” “algorithms,” “demographics,” and “target audience.” These choices show some ability to discuss advertising beyond basic terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “a great discourse in public,” “advertising information about product,” and “craft quality of things and script.” Spelling errors such as “stoped,” “moslty,” and “furthur” also reduce accuracy. The meaning is usually recoverable, but these issues make parts of the response less natural and occasionally less clear. Focus on common, precise collocations and check spelling and word forms; for example, use “public debate,” “product information,” and “develop effective content and campaign scripts.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While some say…” and a conditional structure with “when they know…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “the algorithms is designed” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “most people skip the ads in the first 5 seconds of it” has unclear number agreement and reference. In “while there is another video content is being consumed,” the clause structure is faulty. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in “advertising information about product or service.” Practise checking agreement, clause boundaries, and singular/plural forms, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
