IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that advertising is very sucessful in making us buy different products while some say that advertising has become so mainstram that makority of people do not even look at it. In my opition marketing is very effctive to make us consider to buy different products. This is due to the fact people feel if they do not the new products they will be left out in the latest products while some people also belive that it has become so common that many people just ingore it. In this eassy we are going to discuss both views.

In the present times it is a fact that advertising has inflatrated every aspect of our lifes. People can not go or do anything without these advertisement in there face. Social media apps are most prominent in making them so common, even if you are just watching a video on youtube it is filled with many kinds of advertisments. People have developed tendency to just ignore these advertisment. However, I think that the shear volume of these ads make you subconsciously more inclined towards these products even through we no longer pay attention towards them.

Marketing has become more effective in modren time to make us buy things that are not really necessary. Compaines like apple, samsung release same type of mobile device every year and majority of people upgrade due to thier marketing. They make end user feel like thet are missing new features and will be left behind so many people just tent to buy the new products. For example, millions of new iphone are sold each year even though it is fundamentlly same product as lsat year. Due to these reasons i think marketing is more successful are making us to buy new products.

In conclusion, although people think that advertisement have become so common by being in every part of our life that we just tend to ignore it . I do not agree with this viewpoint becasue in my opition shear amount of marketing and people thinking that they will be left out has made advertising more successful then ever before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and make your own position clear: you acknowledge that people may ignore advertising because it is everywhere, but argue that repeated exposure still influences purchasing. The examples of social-media adverts and annual phone upgrades are relevant, and the iPhone example helps support your view. This meets the task well overall. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the claim that people ignore adverts is explained mainly through their frequency, with little detail about when or why this reduces their influence. The point about feeling “left out” is repeated rather than explored. To strengthen the response further, explain the opposing view more fully and distinguish between consciously noticing an advert and being influenced by it subconsciously.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on why advertising may be ignored, a paragraph supporting its persuasive power, and a conclusion that restates your position. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “However,” “For example,” and “In conclusion.” At times, though, cohesion feels mechanical or unclear. The introduction promises “we are going to discuss both views,” which is a formulaic signpost, and the long opening paragraph combines several ideas that would be clearer as separate sentences. Some references, such as “these advertisement,” are not clear or consistent. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make each paragraph develop one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “subconsciously,” “prominent,” “upgrade,” and “features,” and you can express the central ideas about advertising and consumer behaviour. However, the range is limited by repeated general terms such as “products,” “people,” and “advertising,” while several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “mainstram,” “shear volume,” and “more successful are making us” make parts of the argument less natural. Spelling errors are also noticeable, including “sucessful,” “opition,” and “Compaines.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall message, but they reduce precision and fluency. Build a bank of accurate topic-specific phrases and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “although” and a reason clause with “because.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some sentence structures and grammatical patterns are inaccurate. For example, “feel if they do not the new products” is missing a verb after “do not,” and “make us consider to buy” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also agreement and article problems, as in “advertisement have become,” and punctuation is inconsistent, particularly around the final “although” clause. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, even though the main argument remains clear. Practise verb patterns such as “consider buying” and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
