IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some individuals say that advertising is extremely successful at convincing us to buy things. On the other hand, people think that advertising is so common and this cannot gain attention anymore. In my opinion, advertising is still successful even it is a backdated act to promote a product. This essay will discuss both biews and I will give my conclusion.

First and foremost, advertising is a popular method to promote a new product to gain attentions of audiences. It can promote a product with proper visuals with some famous actors or models. It gathers attention of audiences and persuading us to buy things. On the other hand, advertising mostly gather attentions from children. Sometimes some kid products have an advertisement by exaggerating everything which helps a lot to gain attention and children want to have that product. For example, a chocolate named coco has an advertisement by using animations and also include some superheroes which gather the attention and children insist their parents to buy them that chocolate.

In contrast, there are some advertisements which have some visuals which are not true. Some companies make advertisement for groccery products exaggerating the visuals. Those are less successfull to gain attention and people really don't like those types of advertisements cause they know that product is unpredictable. It can be good or bad. Moreover, people nowadays want review of a product. If the feedback of a product is good then people tend to buy it. For example, a person watch an advertisement of an watch in social media then he will go into their page. After that they will check the feedbacks of that product and reviews on their page. If its all good then he will buy that product.

In conclusion, in my opinion advertisement is still has their legacy and people still now buy products by watching advertisement. Although in this modern era people don't want to buy anything without checking reviews. Nevertheless, advertisement still has their place to gain attentions from customers and persuading them to buy things.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position: advertising can still persuade people, although consumers now check reviews. The examples about a children’s chocolate advert and a shopper checking social-media feedback make the discussion relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The first paragraph explains how visuals and familiar characters attract children, while the opposing view focuses more on misleading images and the role of reviews than on why advertising is so widespread that people ignore it. Your conclusion repeats your opinion, but the claim that advertising is “backdated” is unclear and sits uneasily beside your argument that it remains effective. Explain more directly when advertising is ignored and how that contrasts with its persuasive impact.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “In contrast,” and “Moreover” help signal shifts in the discussion. However, some connections are mechanical or do not accurately express the relationship between ideas. For example, “In contrast” introduces a related limitation of advertising rather than a sharply contrasting view, and the first body paragraph moves from general promotion to children without a clear transition. References such as “they” and “that product” can also be unclear in the example about a shopper. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main argument, then connect examples explicitly to that argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “persuading,” “exaggerating,” “feedback,” and “customers,” and the examples are generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated words and phrases such as “gain attention,” “product,” and “advertisement.” Several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “backdated act,” “gather attentions,” and “less successfull”; these make parts of the argument less clear. Spelling errors such as “biews,” “groccery,” and “successfull” also affect the impression of control. Build a more precise set of topic-related expressions and check word forms and spelling. For instance, distinguish between attracting attention, influencing purchasing decisions, and being ignored by consumers.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If the feedback of a product is good then people tend to buy it.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms remain. Examples include “advertising is still has their legacy,” “a person watch an advertisement,” and “an advertisement … include some superheroes.” The sentence beginning “It gathers attention of audiences and persuading us” also lacks parallel verb forms. Articles and number agreement need attention in phrases such as “an watch” and “feedbacks.” Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and make coordinated verbs use matching forms; this will improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex sentences.
