IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Marketing is one of the most fundamental part of growth of business.Marketng can been done through various methods and one of them is advertisment. The business can not be thrive when nobody knows about your business and to make business succesfull advertisement is the only way that can help to achieve success. With the passage of time the way of advertisement has been transformes as well.Social media has play a vary important role in the advertisment now the bussiness owners don't need to pay the high rents of billing board infact they just do there advertisment through social media.

The social media marketing has a huge influence on the people. It makes people curious to just go through their websites and check it out what they are actually selling and the survey reports suggest that in recent time the real reason behind the rapid increase in the sales of the business is the marketing team. The main part of there job is to make that kind of content that can pursuade the people to buy there things. For example, last year a cookie brand has been established in Pakistan and within one year there business has been rapidly increases and they share the report that says they have achieved 70% increase in there sales as compared to there initial target and this is happens just because of their marketing team, they had just catch the attention of the people that make them forced to buy from them with the funny content.

However, relating to the first paragraph, every person has there own opinions and way of thinking some people thinks that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things while some believes that it is so common that we no longer pay attention to it.Somehow i agree with both statements because yes it is true that a similar method of advertisment can no longer grabs your attention and you just ignore it but if the ways of advertisment has been changed with the time it definitely pursuade people to buy the stuff for example after the success of cookie brand in Pakistan everyone tries to copy there trend rather then to do something different to catch the attention of people and that strategy doesn't helps them to increase there sales.

In conclusion, advertisment is the best method to promote the business and with the presence of social media it even make it easier but the promotion of every product demands the innovation if the marketing team is innovative and do something different at regular intervals it will definitely grabs the atttention of the audience and they will buy the products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear, balanced opinion: advertising can persuade when it is innovative, but repeated or copied approaches may be ignored. The cookie-brand example, including the reported sales increase, gives relevant support for the persuasive side, and your discussion of competitors copying its approach helps explain why advertising can lose impact. However, the second view is less fully developed: you mainly say that similar advertising is ignored, without explaining why audiences become accustomed to it or giving a distinct example. The opening focuses heavily on business growth and social media rather than directly framing the debate. Develop both sides more evenly and make the link between each example and the question explicit. The 22 words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, discussion of advertising’s persuasive effect, a contrasting view, and a conclusion. The progression from social-media promotion to the cookie example and then to your balanced position is generally understandable. However, the first two paragraphs largely develop the same side, so the contrast arrives late, and the conclusion repeats the claim that innovation attracts attention rather than synthesising both views. Linking phrases such as “However” and “In conclusion” help, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “relating to the first paragraph” does not clearly signal the shift to the opposing view, and several long sentences join multiple ideas with commas. Use clearer paragraph purposes and more precise transitions to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “persuading,” “influence,” “sales,” “marketing team,” and “catch the attention,” and you attempt more specific language such as “initial target” and “rapid increase.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “advertisement,” “business,” “people,” and “attention,” while several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “high rents of billing board,” “forced to buy,” and “the promotion of every product demands the innovation.” Spelling errors are also noticeable, including “Marketng,” “advertisment,” and “pursuade,” which can distract the reader. Build a wider set of accurate advertising-related expressions and check spelling and natural word combinations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if the ways of advertisment has been changed with the time” and clauses explaining the cookie brand’s sales. This shows an effort to express relationships between ideas. However, control is inconsistent, especially in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. Examples include “one of the most fundamental part,” “social media has play,” and “this is happens”; these should be revised for agreement and verb form. Long sentences such as the one beginning “For example, last year a cookie brand…” contain several clauses joined mainly by commas, making the structure difficult to follow. Practise accurate complex sentences and divide long explanations into shorter, correctly punctuated units.
