IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Few individuals consider that advertising is extremely successful to encourage people to buy things, while others believe that nowadays advertising is so common people do not pay more attention on it. Although advertising is great way to influence people to buy things because of way of representing , I believe that latter statement holds more importance.
On the one hand, the major reason why some masses holds this view point is way of representing . This is due to the fact that most of the adds are many colorful, attractive and they provide all the information and benefits about the product by which people get more influenced towards adds and by watching adds and advertisements of different product, people have wish to buy and try those products. For instance, in televisions and online platforms most of the stores provide makeup, toys and electronic advertisement by which they have curiosity to buy things. Thus, it is very beneficial for stores and companies.
On the other hand, I believe that people do not seek more attention on advertisement because of false information. This means that, most of the adds provide false information about the product such as product are not in good quality and they show the product at cheaper prices but when the people goes to buy the product the product become expensive. Another worth considering reason of this is repeating the content . To elaborate, if adds are come again and again while watching movies and videos people can easily get bored and irritate. Therefore, they do not pay attention to advertisement.
To conclude, both view point have their merits, I believe that adds is so common and people do not pay longer attention on it because of repeating and false information.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and make your own position clear: you acknowledge that attractive advertising can encourage purchases, but conclude that its prevalence and repetition reduce attention. The two body paragraphs are relevant, and the examples of online and television adverts help illustrate the first view. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The explanation that adverts provide product information and create curiosity is understandable, but the example remains general; a specific example of how an advert changes a buying decision would strengthen it. The second view is supported by repetition and misleading claims, though the point about prices becoming more expensive needs clearer explanation. Develop each reason with a more precise cause-and-effect link.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. This makes the discussion easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” help readers recognise the stages of your argument. The ideas within each paragraph generally progress from a reason to an explanation or example. To make the organisation more fluent, reduce reliance on formulaic transitions and improve links between individual sentences. For example, the shift from false information to repeated content could be signalled as a second, distinct reason. Some references, such as “this view point,” are also vague; name the view or idea directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “advertisement,” “product,” “false information,” “quality,” and “repeating the content.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, which sometimes makes the reader work to understand your meaning. Examples include “pay more attention on it,” “people have wish to buy,” and “masses holds this view point.” The repeated use of “adds” and “advertisement” also limits variety; “ads” is informal for this essay, and “advertisements” would be more suitable. Aim to learn common word partnerships and use them accurately, such as “pay attention to adverts” and “persuade consumers to purchase a product.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using structures such as “Although advertising is…” and “if adds are come again and again…” to connect ideas. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms are noticeable and can make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “most of the masses holds” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “if adds are come” uses an incorrect passive form. In “when the people goes to buy,” the verb does not agree with its subject. Practise building accurate complex sentences, and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb. Also review article use and punctuation around introductory clauses.
