IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued whether advertisments are a key factor in convincing us to purchase a product, or they become so common in a way they do not matter anymore. In my opinion, advertising is palying a significant roll in persuading consumers to buy producst, because of the creativity of some ads and the unique experience thay can provide.

In revent years, the increasing use of smartphones and social media applications has contributed in a widspread use of online marketing. Ads become more interesting and many big companies started to compete in ads' quality more than about the quality of their product. As a result, there are a lot of people who become big fans of these unique ads such as coca cola and pepsi creative ads which have dramatically increased their sells. Additionally, many bransds have started to promot their product or service by paying famous actors or sport players to use it. Consequently, most of the fans of these celebrities will become loyal to these brands.

On the other hand, some argues that marketing campaigns have become less effective way of promoting a brand as they are so common every where. Nowadays, a smartphone user could be exposed to hundred ads in single day, and most users do not read or watch the ads as they just wait to skip them. Moreover, the large number of fake and scam ads on the internet has significantly reduced people's trust in ads.

In conclusion, although ads has become more common and less reliable in recent years, I believe that markting is the most effective to push customers to pay things due to the creativity of some ads and famosu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and make your position clear: you believe advertising can persuade consumers, while acknowledging that its ubiquity and the prevalence of scams can reduce its impact. Relevant support includes creative Coca-Cola and Pepsi campaigns and celebrity endorsements on one side, and users skipping online ads on the other. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that creative ads have “dramatically increased their sells” is not clarified, and the conclusion ends abruptly after “famous,” leaving your final reason incomplete. Develop each example with a clearer explanation of how it supports your view, and ensure the conclusion fully summarises your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting advertising’s persuasive power, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “As a result,” “Additionally,” and “On the other hand” help signal the relationships between ideas. However, some progression is mechanical, and connections within paragraphs could be clearer. For instance, the move from companies competing over ad quality to celebrity endorsements introduces a related but distinct point without explaining the link. The conclusion also stops mid-thought, disrupting the overall flow. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim; finish with a complete summary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “persuading consumers,” “online marketing,” “campaigns,” “celebrity,” and “trust,” which allows you to discuss both sides of the issue. However, the range and control are limited by repeated general terms such as “ads” and “product,” alongside noticeable spelling and word-choice errors. Examples include “advertisments,” “widespread” misspelled as “widspread,” “bransds,” and “sells” where “sales” is intended. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “fans of these celebrities will become loyal to these brands.” Build a more precise range of advertising-related expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully so that your meaning is consistently easy to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “as,” and “although.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction recur. For example, “some argues” should be “some argue,” “Ads become more interesting” would fit the past-time context better as “Ads have become more interesting,” and “a smartphone user could be exposed to hundred ads” needs an article or plural form. The final sentence is also incomplete, so its grammatical structure cannot be followed. Review agreement and article use, and proofread each sentence to ensure it is complete.
