IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The advertising is very popular for give information to peoples about their product or services and also for best marketing . Advertising is extremely growthfull for our business if we can do it in different ways and idea and sometimes advertising is an waste of money if we are repeat same containt in our advertising.

One time i scrolling reels in instagram and suddenly in one reel the ad shows about KFC but i knows already about KFC so i ignored it and continue scrolling reels because there ad i watch different time so ignored because i know about that ad . After some days i scroll reels on same social media platform and then i watch something new about KFC and getting excited after watching this ad because its about new meal or is present different content then I order this KFC meal and enjoy it .

So in my opinion the advertising is both if we shoot or generate with new content or new information because peoples always wants new thing to explore and some people think ad is no longer successful so these people repeated there idea and there content and also repeat there same social media platform and some people think ad is still beneficiary for business and for sale they thinks like that because they what people wants and waht people need so they represent there ad just like people wants

Afterall we understand the all point of why people says ad is no longer usefull and some says advertising is still benefit according to this all paragraph i represent my own opinion ad is still successfull if we represent in right way infront of people by the right social media platform.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a clear overall opinion: advertising can still work when it presents new content. The KFC example is relevant and illustrates how a fresh advertisement changed your response after you had ignored repeated ads. However, the discussion is uneven: the view that advertising is so common that people stop noticing it is mainly represented through your personal experience, while the claim that advertising persuades people more broadly is not explained in much depth. The conclusion repeats your position rather than drawing together the two arguments. Develop each view with a clear reason and a supporting example, and explain more directly how advertising influences purchasing decisions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, and the KFC anecdote gives the reader a recognisable sequence from ignoring an advertisement to buying a new meal. However, progression across the essay is not consistently clear: the opening introduces several points at once, and the third paragraph combines your opinion with general claims about different advertisers and audiences. Linking phrases such as “So in my opinion” and “Afterall” are used, but they do not always show the precise relationship between ideas, and some points are repeated. Give each paragraph a distinct purpose—one for each view, followed by your opinion—and use clear references and transitions to connect the reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “advertising,” “marketing,” “content,” and “social media platform,” and the KFC example makes the meaning of your point understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the message difficult to follow. Examples include “extremely growthfull,” “an waste of money,” “beneficiary for business,” and repeated use of “same content.” Spelling and informal phrasing, such as “peoples” and “Afterall,” also reduce precision. Build a more accurate set of topic collocations and vary repeated words; for example, distinguish between an advertisement’s reach, its persuasive effect, and its relevance to consumers.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a sequence explaining how you saw an advertisement and later ordered the meal. However, complex sentences are often difficult to control, and frequent errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation can interrupt understanding. For example, “I knows already about KFC” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “if we shoot or generate with new content” does not form a clear grammatical clause. Several sentences run together without clear punctuation, especially in the final two paragraphs. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them using controlled clauses such as “Although I ignored the repeated advert, I responded to a new one.”
