IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, advertisements provide opportunity to every individual to garner the knowledge over the different kinds of products with which people are not familiar. A certain section of community says that publicity is very useful way to influence people to buy the things and products. While the others affirm that advertisement are become so common that people are tend to ignore them. I accord the former view and going to dicuss both views in the upcoming paraghraph.

On the one hand, in this technological era every thing is available in online platform. Individuals spend lots on the laptops, computers and cellphones. Therefore, the online advertisement are published on the online platforms. Some are very informative, interesting and entertaining that expalin all the upsides of the particular product. That encouages people to buy them. The another factor is that, most of the products are advertise by the well-known celebrity who are inspiration for people. Therefore, the fans blindly trust on them and attract towards the products.

However, there is another side of the argument some people think that advertising is so common that we no longer attract towards them. The most significant reason is that, in this contemperory era people have fully packed schedule. No one have spare time to watch this advertisement that are published online. Furthermore, people skips the adds. It means, most of the apps and websites provides the feature to skip the advertisement if they are not interested and do not have enough time. This makes the andorsement so common among the individuals.

In conclusion, In my opinion, advertisement are plays are very big role to encourage people to buy the products due to attractive animations and advetise by their favourite celebrity. Wheras, due to lack of time and skipping option make the publicity more common among the individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position: “I accord the former view” indicates that you believe advertising can persuade people to buy. The first body paragraph supports this with online advertisements and celebrity endorsements, while the second explains that busy people may skip adverts. These points are relevant, but they are not developed equally: the claim that fans “blindly trust” celebrities would benefit from a specific explanation or example, and the opposing view is mainly explained through lack of time and skip options. Your conclusion restates both sides, though it could make your own judgement more decisive. The response meets the task’s length requirement; the 11 words copied from the prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. This makes the discussion easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “However” help distinguish the arguments. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This makes the endorsement so common” does not clearly explain how skipping adverts leads to advertising becoming common, and “The another factor” does not link smoothly to the preceding point. The conclusion repeats ideas rather than drawing them together. To improve, use referencing that clearly identifies the idea being discussed and make each sentence’s relationship to the next explicit, while varying transitions rather than relying mainly on formulaic markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “influence,” “informative,” “entertaining,” “celebrity,” and “feature to skip.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common terms show an effort to be precise. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, word forms, and spelling are noticeable: “garner the knowledge over” is unnatural, “attract towards the products” is not idiomatic, and “andorsement” and “contemperorary” are misspelled. Repetition of “advertisement,” “products,” and “people” also limits flexibility. Build accuracy by learning common word partnerships and checking spelling and word forms; for instance, use “gain information about products” and “be attracted to a product.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, including clauses introduced by “that” and “if,” as in “Some are very informative… that explain all the upsides” and “if they are not interested.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “advertisement are become,” “people are tend to ignore,” “No one have spare time,” and “advertisement are plays.” Some sentences also have awkward or incomplete structures, such as “The another factor is that, most of the products are advertise…” Work on forming complete clauses and checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns. More accurate control of these structures would make your arguments clearer.
