IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

According to some people advertisements are crucial for persuading cutomers to make purchases. Others believe that advertisements have become so ubiquitous that people barely pay any heed to them. I believe advertisements are necessary because they help people know what is available in the market, but their excess can lead to consumer fatigue.

Advertisements are the main source of marketing for businesses. No matter how good a product is the public will be unaware of its existance until it is advertised. When people see a product on bill boards, television or on social media multiple times a day, they are tempted to giving it a try. For example, a few years ago, a Korean company, Buldak, introduced instant ramen by starting an online trend where people ate the spicy noodles live on a stream. The trend gained popularity on Instagram; today Buldak is sold and loved around the world.

On the other hand, some individuals believe that due to their excess, people no longer pay attention to ads. Also, seeing the same products everywhere gives people exposure fatigue and instead of wanting to buy it, people get annoyed. For example, being bombarded with the unskippable digital games ads with loud sounds and overstimulating visuals between Youtube videos disrupts the user's experience and leads to annoyance.

In conclusion, marketing is necessary for a company to make sales but, over marketing causes customers to be oversensitized. I firmly maintain that in moderation they do help buyers in making an investment in the product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and state a clear position: advertising helps consumers learn about products, although excessive exposure can cause fatigue. The two body paragraphs develop the opposing arguments with relevant examples, especially the Buldak social-media trend and intrusive video-game advertisements. This gives the response a clear, supported discussion. To strengthen the development further, explain more explicitly how the examples demonstrate persuasion or declining attention, rather than relying on the reader to infer the link. The conclusion restates your position, but “making an investment in the product” is not quite the same as making an informed purchase. Overall, the task is covered and the position remains clear, with some scope to make the reasoning more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from the introduction to one view, the opposing view, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” make the relationship between sections clear. Examples are placed in the relevant paragraphs, supporting the overall organisation. Some connections within paragraphs could be made more explicit: after describing the Buldak trend, for instance, state directly how repeated exposure persuaded consumers to try the product. The conclusion also repeats the central contrast without adding much synthesis. Continue using clear paragraphing, while varying transitions and strengthening links between claims, examples, and their implications.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonably varied vocabulary, including “ubiquitous,” “consumer fatigue,” “bombarded,” and “overstimulating,” which helps express the topic with some precision. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, though a few choices are inaccurate or awkward: “exposure fatigue” is less natural than “advertising fatigue,” and “oversensitized” does not fit the intended meaning as well as “overexposed” or “desensitised.” Spelling slips such as “cutomers” and “existance” are noticeable, while “Youtube” should be written “YouTube.” Aim for accurate collocations and careful proofreading, especially when using ambitious vocabulary. This would make the range you already show sound more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the conditional idea in “No matter how good a product is…” and the contrast in “instead of wanting to buy it, people get annoyed.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “they are tempted to giving it a try,” use “tempted to give it a try”; after “to,” the base verb is required. The opening sentence also needs a comma after its introductory phrase: “According to some people, …”. In the conclusion, the comma before “but” is unnecessary in “necessary for a company to make sales but, over marketing causes…,” and the sentence would benefit from clearer punctuation and structure. Review verb patterns and punctuation while retaining your varied sentence forms.
