IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
A group of individuals claim that we buy items just because of forcing us through extreme marketing of products. Other group of individuals believe that marketing is too basic that we do not notice much for a long.
First of all, I discuss about advertisement has deep impact on the mind of people. Most of us buy products by watching ads on social media platforms even we may not need of them. In the current situation, the trend of e-commerce businesses have been spread rapidly since last 10 years. In fact each brand, small shops and even entrepreneurs which start from homes create their a lot of advertisement contents and post them on social accounts regularly. As a result, these contents attract the viewers and urge them to buy listed things immediately. In this way advertising persuade people to buy products, however, it does not matter whether this product is crucial or not.
Now, I illustrate other claim that some people do not become curious to buy everything which they saw in marketing stuff. They buy that products only which they are needed. These types of people do not react much even a discount offer shows by the brands in advertising. The main reason of this patience is that the mindset of a person is different from others who become crazy by listening the name of discount or sale on brands. Thus, some people think that advertising is so common and cannot grab their attention.
From my prospective, both claims are considerable as true because every person has his own interest in shopping. Some people do shopping for mind relaxation while some purchase things to satisfy themselves. However, there are many people who buy thing only when they need for that particular item. Therefore, each person claims the given statement according to his own nature.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and give a concluding opinion, so the response addresses the main parts of the prompt. The first view is supported with relevant examples, such as social-media advertisements and online businesses encouraging immediate purchases. The opposing view is also explained through people who buy only what they need and are not swayed by discounts. However, the discussion is somewhat general, and the final position—that both claims are true because people have different interests—does not clearly explain how you weigh the two views. Some supporting points, such as shopping for “mind relaxation,” are introduced without being developed. To strengthen the response, explain the mechanisms behind each view and make your own judgement more definite and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “First of all,” “Now,” and “From my prospective” help readers follow the intended progression. However, some linking is mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always smooth. For example, the shift from e-commerce growth to advertisements persuading viewers could be explained more explicitly. References such as “these contents” and “that products” are also not always clear or consistent, which weakens cohesion. The conclusion repeats the idea that people differ in their shopping habits rather than drawing the discussion together. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make links between examples and claims more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “e-commerce businesses,” “social media platforms,” “discount offer,” and “grab their attention.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited in places, and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, such as “forcing us through extreme marketing,” “advertisement contents,” and “buy listed things.” Repetition of “people,” “buy,” and “products” also reduces variety. These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise, even though the general message remains understandable. Build a bank of natural advertising-related phrases and practise using them in context, for example, “influence purchasing decisions,” “promotional content,” and “make an impulse purchase.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because,” “even,” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to process. For example, “the trend of e-commerce businesses have been spread” has problems with agreement and verb construction, while “They buy that products only which they are needed” has errors in number and clause structure. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “do not need of them” and “discuss about advertisement.” Work on accurate subject–verb agreement, article use, and sentence patterns for relative clauses. Shorter, carefully checked sentences will help you control grammar while you develop more complex forms.
