IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Opinions varies among consumers that advertisements are benificial to the salers or not.Certain people holds a belief that it plays crucial role in the decission making of the buyers, whereas others assist that they are no longer bothered by the consumers nowadays.Personally, I am inclined to the former view as it outweigh its drawbacks.
One of the main attention towards the advertisements is that it attracts coustomers to know about how their product varies from other similar ones already existing in the market. This helps them to increase their sales, as it makes people to think that the item is new or improved version.Furthermore, they help them to display their results or benifits, which is mainly absorbed by the audience and helps them to take their decision. For instance,Xro protein powder shows the improved mass in a person in their ads which impress their buyers to instantly purchase the product.
However, people usually skip ads when they are busy with some herculant task as it tend to divert them from their goal, and may not see what it is actually advertising, this reflects that adverstisments are some times ignored by the viewer. Moreover, people are enggaed with other significant work where they mainly ignores the pamplets on which certain things are advertised. For example, College who prints small pamplets and circulate it with the newspapers are left untouched when it gets delivered, which reflects the fact that they are greatly ignored by many people these days.
In conclusion, although advertisments have limitations such as being ignored at some time as it reduces the excitement and diverts the viewer from their main interest, its advantages such as highlighting the main differences and post usage results are grater. In my point of view, advertsiments are changing their way of communication which makes them to reach more audience and help with extremly increased sales.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for advertising’s persuasive effect, especially in the opening and conclusion. The examples about protein powder and college pamphlets make the discussion relevant, and you explain how product comparisons and demonstrated results can influence buyers. This meets the task well overall, but the two sides are not developed equally: the first view receives more explanation, while the claim that advertising is so common that people ignore it is mainly illustrated through busy people skipping ads and pamphlets. The point about advertising becoming commonplace could be explained more directly. To strengthen the response, develop the reasoning behind each view and make the final opinion more precise than saying advertising’s advantages outweigh its drawbacks.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “Furthermore,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant claims. This gives the essay a coherent progression. Some links between ideas are less clear, however. For example, “they help them to display their results” uses unclear references, and the shift from people being busy to pamphlets being ignored is not fully explained. Several sentences also join multiple points without clear punctuation, making the flow less smooth. Use more precise references and show explicitly how each example supports the paragraph’s main idea; vary linking phrases rather than relying mainly on standard transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “decision making,” “audience,” “sales,” and “advertised,” and attempt phrases such as “improved version” and “main differences.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “benificial,” “coustomers,” “decission,” and “enggaed.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “absorbed by the audience” and “improved mass in a person.” The range is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, but inaccurate forms and repeated general terms such as “people,” “ads,” and “things” limit precision. Build a bank of accurate advertising collocations and proofread spelling and word forms; choose specific terms such as “consumers,” “product features,” and “purchase decisions” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast structure with “whereas” and a concession in the conclusion with “although.” These choices show some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors can make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “Opinions varies” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “it attracts customers” does not clearly agree with the plural subject “advertisements.” In “people usually skip ads … as it tend to divert them,” the pronoun and verb forms do not match their intended subject. Missing spaces after full stops and commas also affect readability. Practise checking agreement, pronoun reference, articles, and sentence boundaries, then simplify any complex sentence whose structure is difficult to control.
