IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people profess that advertisements have ahigh success rate of influencing people into buying the products. While other believe that advertisements have become so common that humans have a nonchalant behaviour towards them.In my opinion the population has consumed numerous ads and now do not pay hedd to any marketing stratergy.

The advocates of the former view believe that advertisements emphasises heavily on product benefits convincing people to buy it. In the modern world various methods are adapted to commercialise items in a way that the users find an urgent need to buy it. For instance making the packaging extremely attractive or advertising the limited number of products and exagrating its uses. Moreover when the commercialisation is being heavily promoted the people buy the products from the fear of being left out from having the access to the product.

A number of people oppose the former idea and argue that these methods of advertisements have been normalised. The televisions and media platforms have flooded people from plenty of advertisements that it makes them frustrated. Prompting people to skip these as evry other advertising platform has adopted similar alluring techniques. The population is fed of this, in addition the market contains numerous identical items that perform the similar functions. Having consumed a large proportion of media they are aware of the comapnies tactics and are not fooled so easily.

In conclusion, I reiterate that every company have been adopting the same marketing stratergy due to which the buyers do not get fooled pretty easily, they first check the quality and durability and then reach to a conclusion whether to purchase it or not. Therefore advertisements have became obselete in terms of persuading people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state your own position: the introduction says people have become nonchalant towards advertising, and the conclusion argues that buyers now check quality and durability. The two body paragraphs also give relevant reasons, including attractive packaging, scarcity appeals, advertising saturation, and consumers’ awareness of marketing tactics. This covers the task well, but the discussion is unevenly developed. The first view is supported with examples, while the second relies on broad claims such as people being frustrated and not easily fooled; explaining when advertising still influences purchases would make the comparison more balanced. Your position is clear, though the claim that advertising has become obsolete is stronger than the evidence provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from persuasive techniques to advertising saturation is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening “While other believe…” is not smoothly joined to the preceding sentence, and “Prompting people to skip these…” is a fragment that interrupts the flow. References such as “these methods” and “this” could also identify their subject more precisely. To strengthen cohesion, connect related claims within complete sentences and use transitions that show the relationship between ideas rather than simply adding another point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “commercialise,” “limited number of products,” “fear of being left out,” and “marketing strategy.” These choices show an effort to discuss advertising beyond basic terms. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and sometimes make the phrasing awkward: “profess” is not natural for expressing an opinion here, “nonchalant behaviour” is imprecise, and “the population is fed of this” is unclear. There are also misspellings such as “exagrating,” “comapnies,” and “obselete.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and proofread spelling; this would make your vocabulary more effective and flexible without needing unnecessarily elaborate wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “items that perform the similar functions” and a reason clause beginning “due to which.” However, attempts at longer structures are often faulty, and errors recur across the response. Examples include “While other believe” (subject–verb agreement), “advertisements emphasises” (agreement), “every company have” (agreement), and “advertisements have became” (verb form). The sentence beginning “The televisions and media platforms have flooded people…” is also structurally unclear, while “Prompting people to skip these” is a fragment. These errors sometimes make the reader pause to interpret the meaning. Practise checking agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, while keeping complex sentences manageable.
