IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, there is a discussion about whether people are attracted to advertisements of a product on purchasing them or they check the product in detail. While some people believe that advertising will play an important role in purchasing products, others think that in these days advertising of a product is very common that no person will pay attention to it. I strongly believe that advertising is an important step to introduce a product to market or to reach customers.

On the one hand, according to some people advertising is ultimately successful at convincing them to buy products. This is because to introduce a product into the market advertising is the better choice overly, then they highlights the product in a way how customer will attract to buy such products. For example, a brand new cosmetic product is ready to launch into the market. Then they plan to introduce it via advertisement with huge budget which highlights the product uses such as brightening the skin, non-sticky texture and removes darkness. As a result, if a company introduces the product with an advertising, there is s possibility to reach customers very quickly.

On the other hand, other people believe that in theses advertising a product is so common and people only pay attention on it according to there interest. reason behind this is people are well educated and they are able to check the products in detail before using it instead of blindly following the advertisings and reviews of a product. Therefore, it saves money of customers and their health too.

In conclusion, although checking a product in detail is a better choice, it may create several disadvantages. I strongly believe that trusting a product by advertisements is a better option because they only mention what it results. More over, people should use such products with some appropriate precautions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state a clear preference for advertising, so the response is relevant to the task. The example of a cosmetic product illustrates how advertising can highlight features and reach customers. However, the opposing view is less fully explained: the claim that educated consumers inspect products is not developed with a specific example or explanation of why advertising is ignored. Your conclusion also introduces the idea that trusting advertisements is better, but does not reconcile this with your earlier point about checking products in detail. To strengthen the response, explain both positions more evenly and make your own view consistent and more carefully qualified.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the overall arrangement. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and some links feel mechanical. For instance, “Then they plan to introduce it” does not clearly identify who “they” refers to, while “Therefore” introduces a result that is not fully established by the preceding point. The conclusion also shifts from product checking to trusting advertisements without a clear transition. Use more precise referencing and make each sentence build directly on the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “convincing,” “introduce a product,” “customers,” and “precautions,” and the cosmetic example gives you opportunities to describe product features. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making meaning harder to follow. Examples include “attracted to advertisements … on purchasing them,” “the better choice overly,” and “pay attention on it.” There are also spelling errors such as “theses” and “there” where “their” is intended. Aim to learn natural phrases for discussing consumer behaviour and advertising, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “if a company introduces the product … there is … possibility to reach customers.” However, complex sentences are often not controlled accurately, and errors recur across the response. For example, “they highlights” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “how customer will attract” has an incomplete verb construction. In “people … are able to check the products … before using it,” the pronoun does not agree with the plural noun. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “with an advertising” and the lower-case “reason behind this.” Practise building accurate clauses before adding more complexity.
