IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, advertisment play a ceritical role to infulence people. Its often argued whether advertising has a strong infulence on people. It is now so common that people ignore it. This essay will discuss both view along with my opinion.

To start with, there are many reasons associated with it. The first and foremost point is, create story. To explain this, companies use emotional stories and attractive image to connect with customers. For example, many food brands show happy families eating together, which makes them happy too. Moreover, advertisement are now targeted throught social media. To justify this, platform like Instagram and YouTube show ads on what we have searched for before, so people are more likely to buy what they see. This is why big brands spend millions of dollars on ads every year. Because it works.

On the other hand, advertising is everywhere. To presize this, people see hundred of ads everyday on phones, TV and bilboards, so they have learned to skip or ignore them. For instance, many users use the skip ad button on YouTube or install ad blockers. As a result, they think advertising has least in power.

In my opinion, eventhough we try to ignore ads, they still control our choice at a subconcious level. We may not remeber every ad, but when we go to shop, we often choose the brand we have seen many times online. Therefore, advertising remains successfull.

In conclusion, although we try to ignore ads that we are surrounded by too many ads and often ignore them, believe advertising still as a very strong effect on our buying behaviour.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a consistent opinion: advertising can be ignored consciously but still influence choices subconsciously. The examples of emotional food advertising, targeted social-media ads, and ad blockers are relevant and help explain the two positions. This meets the task well overall. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed: for example, “This is why big brands spend millions” and “Because it works” do not explain how the examples demonstrate persuasive success. The opposing view is also less fully explored than your argument that advertising remains influential. To strengthen the response, explain the mechanisms and limits of each view in more detail, while keeping your position clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. The progression from persuasive techniques to advertising saturation is easy to follow, and examples generally appear in the relevant paragraphs. You also use linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “As a result.” At times, however, these links feel mechanical or do not create a complete connection: “Because it works” is a fragment, and the conclusion repeats the idea that ads are everywhere and ignored without clearly resolving the contrast. Some opening phrases, such as “To start with” and “To justify this,” could be replaced with more direct links between claims and explanations. Aim for smoother connections and clearer references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “targeted,” “emotional stories,” “ad blockers,” and “subconscious level,” which helps communicate your ideas. However, the range and control are limited by frequent spelling errors and inaccurate word forms, such as “advertisment,” “infulence,” “presize,” and “successfull.” Several expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “least in power” does not clearly express that advertising has less influence, while “create story” and “attractive image” need more natural phrasing. These issues sometimes make the reader pause, although the main meaning is generally recoverable. Build a bank of accurate advertising-related collocations and proofread spelling and word forms; this would make your vocabulary more precise and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “brands show happy families eating together, which makes them happy too” and a concession in “even though we try to ignore ads.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence-level errors affect clarity. For example, “advertisement are now targeted” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “The first and foremost point is, create story” is not a complete grammatical construction. The final sentence also lacks a clear main clause after “although,” making your conclusion difficult to interpret. There are some correctly formed sentences, but complex structures are not yet controlled reliably. Practise complete clause patterns, agreement, articles, and punctuation, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
