IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, many people are of the opinion that advertising is becoming successful in convincing people to shop for things because of their engaging and attractive marketing campaigns and various discount offers, while others believe that it's ubiquitous and people don't put focus onto it. In my opinion, this happens because there are many vendors who advertise their products, and with such a larger number of products, people find it somewhat uninteresting.

With the advancements in digital technology such as social media and smartphones, many business owners advertise their products on television and social media platforms in quite interactive and engaging ways. This persuades the consumers to buy things that are unnecessary. In addition, many discounted offers are given to special customers who buy things frequently, which enhances the trust towards the vendor. For example, many clothing brands sign contracts with actors and actresses to advertise their products in unique ways. As a result, people spend their earnings on these items.

In contrast, there are numerous advertisements for different products seen on television nowadays, and every time a different advertisement is going through people's eyes. They are occupied in their daily routines and work life, so they just consider it a normal advertisement and find it less interesting. This usually happens when a large number of products are available and being marketed at the same time. For instance, beverage brands like Pepsi and Coca-Cola advertise their products the same way to please the customers.

In conclusion, although attractive advertisement campaigns have been successful in persuading the people to buy things, I believe that many people don't pay attention to buy such stuff, and it's in their best interests.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a personal position: the first body paragraph explains how engaging campaigns and discounts can encourage purchases, while the second describes how advertising saturation can make people less attentive. Your conclusion also restates your view. However, the position is not fully consistent: the introduction suggests people find advertising uninteresting because there are many vendors, whereas the conclusion says people do not pay attention to buying the products. The second view is also less developed; the Pepsi and Coca-Cola example does not clearly show why people ignore advertising. Explain the mechanism more precisely and support each view with a relevant example to make the discussion more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “In contrast,” “In addition,” and “As a result” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This usually happens when a large number of products are available” does not clearly explain how product availability leads people to ignore advertisements, and the final sentence introduces “their best interests” without establishing what this refers to. The introduction also combines the two positions in a long sentence, making the contrast harder to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and make each example explicitly support the point in its paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “engaging,” “discounted offers,” “ubiquitous,” and “persuading.” These choices allow you to discuss both the appeal and the prevalence of advertising. There are also some imprecise or unnatural collocations, such as “put focus onto it,” “enhances the trust towards the vendor,” and “going through people's eyes.” “Buy things” and “stuff” are repeated or informal for an academic discussion, while “advertisement” and “advertising” could be used more precisely. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more accurate collocations and vary repeated general words with topic-specific alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because there are many vendors who advertise their products” and a contrast structure beginning “although.” Most sentences communicate their main meaning, and errors rarely obstruct understanding. Some grammatical patterns are not controlled consistently. For example, “people don't put focus onto it” has an awkward verb pattern, and “people don't pay attention to buy such stuff” uses an incorrect construction after “pay attention.” The long opening sentence also makes the relationship between its clauses difficult to manage. Practise accurate verb patterns and prepositions, and divide long sentences where needed so that complex ideas remain clear.
