IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, companies are using advertisement compaigns as an approach to increase their customers. Some people regard this method as a useful approach to make people agree buy thing, while others believe that compaigns are very common and grabs no attention anymore. In this essay, I will discuss both these views in detail before giving my opinion.

First of all, advertising various products on bill boards and electronic media have been in practice for decades. Recently, social media platforms are also analyzed by compaign agencies where multiple adds related to products pop up. These commercials and adds are designed and directed in a way which make audience agree to buy products. For example, the food franchises use color schemes which are very good at grabbing attentions of children, also the ingredients are mouth-watering. Furthermore, the celebrities promoting such items also double the sales as a lot of customers buy things on fan basis. Lastly, compaigns regarding multiple percentage offs also boost sales.

But, many people regard this approach as outdated one. The products market have become so competitive that one can find thousand of brands under single category. For example, consider a fast food commercials and banners, the same script of adds for every second company and same sales offers. Similar trends for cloths, footwares, technology and skincare.

In my opinion, brands and companies need to work on their quality and prices rather than solely focusing on advertisments. At present, there is no charm left in such advertisments and they are useless if one has to compromise on quality. To be very honest, when adds and commercials pop up, the script is already known by many.

In conclusion, although the advertisements are significant for delivering the product launch and sale announcements, but companies must use this technique after assuraning good product quality and price. Due to competition in market, the glamourization will not enhance purchases if the product is not excellent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: advertising can influence purchases, but companies should prioritise product quality and price. The examples of food branding, celebrity promotion and discounts support the first view, while the repeated fast-food adverts and offers illustrate why some people tune out. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the second view is supported mainly by the claim that adverts are repetitive, and the conclusion largely restates your opinion. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how advertising’s ubiquity reduces attention, and develop your own position with a specific reason or example. This would make the discussion more fully supported and balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to each view and then to your opinion and conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the discussion, and signposts such as “First of all,” “But,” and “In my opinion” make the stages explicit. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the first body paragraph strings together several points with “Furthermore” and “Lastly” rather than showing how they relate. The sentence beginning “For example, consider a fast food…” is also followed by a fragment-like list of other product categories, which interrupts progression. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect examples directly to the claim they support; clearer referencing between sentences would make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “competitive,” “color schemes,” “boost sales,” and “compromise on quality,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems limit precision: “compaign,” “adds,” “attentions,” and “assuraning” recur or appear in prominent places. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “agree buy thing,” “buy things on fan basis,” and “the products market.” Repetition of “advertisements,” “products,” and “sales” further narrows the range. Aim for accurate topic-specific collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “persuade consumers to buy,” “brand loyalty,” and “the product market.” This would make your vocabulary more flexible and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including relative clauses (“which are very good at grabbing…”) and a concession in the conclusion. The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, plurals and sentence construction recur. For example, “advertising … have been” needs a singular verb, while “which make audience agree” needs agreement and a clearer object. “The products market have become” also has agreement problems, and “although … but” combines two contrasting structures unnecessarily. The list beginning “Similar trends for cloths…” is not a complete sentence. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and check that each sentence has a complete main clause. More accurate control of these patterns would support your range of structures.
