IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, advertising plays a significant role in influencing people purchasing decisions. While some people believe that advertising is are highly effective in encouraging consumers to buy products, others argue that their frequent appearance makes people ignore them. This essay discus both views, and i believe that advertising remains an effective marketing tool, although its impact varies from person to person.
One the one hand, advertising can persuade people to bye different products. One important reason is that advertisements show the features and benefits of products in an attractive way. For example, advertisement for mobile camera show their good cameras, attractive designs and new features. As a result, people may want to buy the latest models even if their old phone are still working. Moreover, famous actors and social media influencers often promote products, which can encourage their followers to purchase them. Therefore, advertising can have a strong influence on people buying decisions.
One the other hand, some people think that advertising is so common that people often ignore it. Nowadays, we see advertisements on television, facebook, youtube and many websites.Because people people see them so frequently, they may lose interest and skip them. In addition, some advertisements, provide false or exaggerated information about products. This can make people lose companies and their advertisements can still attract attention if they are interesting, useful and honest.
In conclusion, advertising can encourage people to buy products, but its frequent appearance may cause people to ignore it. In my opinion, advertising is still an effective way to influence customers, especially when it provides useful information and attracts people attention.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear opinion: advertising can influence buyers, although its effect varies. The first body paragraph supports the persuasive view with product features and celebrity or influencer endorsements; the second explains that repeated exposure can lead people to skip adverts. These are relevant points, but some are less fully developed than others. The mobile-phone example is understandable, while the point about exaggerated claims is left unfinished: “This can make people lose companies” does not explain what consumers lose trust in or how this affects advertising. Clarifying that consequence and extending the second view would make the discussion more complete. Your conclusion restates your position, but could draw the two arguments together more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The sentence beginning “This can make people lose companies” is unclear, so the link between false claims and the effect on consumers breaks down. There is also repetition of “people” and “advertising,” and the final sentence of the second body paragraph appears to combine two ideas without a clear connection. Use pronouns or precise references where appropriate, and ensure each sentence develops the point immediately before it.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “consumers,” “influencers,” “promote products,” “frequent appearance,” and “exaggerated information.” This is enough to communicate the main ideas, but the range and control are uneven, with noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors. Examples include “bye” for “buy,” “discus” for “discuss,” and “people buying decisions” instead of “people’s purchasing decisions.” The phrase “lose companies” is also unclear and appears to be an inaccurate choice of words. Some expressions, such as “good cameras,” are rather basic for this topic. Build a small set of accurate collocations about consumer behaviour and advertising, and proofread spelling and possessives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “While some people believe…” and a conditional sentence with “even if.” These structures help express the discussion, but errors in sentence formation and control remain noticeable. For example, “advertising is are highly effective” contains an incorrect verb form, while “advertisement for mobile camera show” has problems with articles, number, and subject–verb agreement. There are also missing possessives in “people purchasing decisions” and “people attention,” and the sentence about false information is not grammatically complete in meaning. Check agreement, articles, and possessive forms, and revise each sentence to ensure its clauses connect clearly.
