IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

No.1 way to promot or launch a brand is to advertise that brand's item on multiple platfroms. Many individuals argue that advertising is increadibly successful at making us purschase products, while other believe that ads are very common that we berely watch them. This essay will discuss both perspectives and argue why i think advertising help us find right product and boots brand recognition.

One main reason, watching ad on televison or other platforms helps finding right product and saves a lot of time. Is simply because searching for an item on multiple websites after reviewing, reading discription and comparing can be exhausted and time consuming. Whereas, for example watching washing machin ad demonstrating the use and other features makes it very easy to understand and finalise the product. Therefore, purschasing an item by watching an advertisment is much efficient and time saver.

On the other hand, repatetive ads of well know brands gain recognition but often get ignored. This is because frequently getting interrupted by ads while watching movies/series is pretty annoying resulting to not paying attention to the agenda of that advertise. This is defeating the whole purpuse for instance, while watching a series we encounter multiple ads but mearly focuses on any because people are used to ignoring. As a result, frequently played ads are looked over.

In conclusion, although both views are accurate depanding on the situation, In my opinion paying attention or ignoring to an advertise depands on the consumers/viewers requierment ( and how frequently the ad is played).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views: advertising can help consumers identify a suitable product, while repeated interruptions may lead people to ignore ads. Your opinion is also present, especially in the introduction and conclusion, where you connect advertising’s usefulness to consumers’ needs and how often an ad appears. The washing-machine example supports the first view, and the example of ads interrupting a series supports the second. However, the position that advertising “helps us find right product and boots brand recognition” is not fully carried through: brand recognition is mentioned but not explained, and the conclusion mainly says that either response depends on the situation. Develop each main point further and make your overall judgement more decisive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion. The contrast between the views is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “Therefore,” and “As a result” help signal relationships. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. For example, “This is defeating the whole purpose” does not clearly specify which point it refers to, and the conclusion repeats the idea that the effect depends on the situation without bringing the discussion to a firm resolution. Improve progression by making each paragraph’s main claim explicit, then linking the example directly to that claim and its consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “brand recognition,” “comparing,” “features,” “interrupted,” and “consumers,” which helps communicate the main ideas. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “promot,” “platfroms,” “purschase,” and “repetative”; these should be checked carefully. Some phrases also need more natural collocation: “finalise the product” and “much efficient and time saver” do not express the intended meaning smoothly. Build a more reliable range of advertising and consumer vocabulary, and check spelling and word forms during revision. More precise phrasing would make your arguments clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “Whereas” and a reason clause beginning “This is because.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some sentence structures and grammatical patterns are inaccurate. For instance, “One main reason, watching ad … helps finding” lacks a clear grammatical connection, while “other believe” and “advertising help” show subject–verb agreement problems. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “watching washing machin ad” and the fragment “Is simply because searching…” These errors sometimes interrupt the flow of reading. Practise forming complete sentences and checking agreement, articles, and verb patterns while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
