IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many individuals believe that advertising is very good at convincing us to purchase different items, while other argue that it is so usual thesedays that they do not give much attention to it. In my opinion, advertising is still a major cause of persuading people to buy things and in this essay I will prove this with reasons.

One of the significant advantages it brings is its creativity. Most of the ads are designed in such a way that they include different aspects of arts. The ad makers loves to play with the consumers brain. For example, during festivals most of the ads or commercials we see are related to festival importance. They add some traditional items relating to the culture or that specific festival, users find them attractive and forces them to buy it as soon as possible. I strongly believe that the trend of advertisements will grow over the period because of their creativity, quality and other efforts.

On the other hand, some people argue that it is losing interest and has become so common these days. One of the reason may be that they find it distractive because their needs might be fulfilled with the wide range of shops and supermarkets nearby. So they claim too many ads are usless and they try to avoid them. Another reason is that people had a bad experience with online purchasing. Sometimes they do not recieve the same quality as claimed by the seller. Hence, these reasons have put the people into situations where they think ads are no longer usefull and they should not focus on them.

In conclusion, although some people argue advertising is common thesedays because of their bad experience with them and thet think it as a mean of distraction, it is still so popular in convincing individuals to buy things because of their creativity in the making and way of presentation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: advertising remains influential because of its creativity. The festival-advertising example is relevant and helps explain how cultural details can attract consumers. You also give two reasons for the opposing view—advertising may feel distracting when shopping options are readily available, and disappointing online purchases can reduce trust. However, these points are not developed equally. The first view would be more convincing with a clearer explanation of how creative presentation leads to an actual purchase, while the second reason shifts from advertising being ignored to dissatisfaction with sellers without fully explaining the connection. Develop each claim with a specific consequence or example, and make the comparison between the views more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression within the opposing-view paragraph is also understandable, with “One of the reason” and “Another reason” signalling separate points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger control associated with the next level. However, links can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear: in “they do not give much attention to it,” “they” and “it” require the reader to infer the intended people and advertising. The conclusion repeats much of the introduction rather than synthesising the discussion. Use more precise referencing and connect each example directly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “persuading,” “creativity,” “traditional items,” “distractive,” and “bad experience.” There are also attempts to express more specific concepts, such as ads reflecting festival culture. However, the range and control are uneven, with repeated general words such as “ads,” “people,” and “things,” and several inaccurate or misspelled choices: “thesedays,” “usless,” “recieve,” and “usefull.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “play with the consumers brain” and “losing interest.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Build a bank of accurate advertising-related collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “although.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the response includes some effective sentence patterns, such as “Sometimes they do not receive the same quality as claimed by the seller.” However, some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inaccurate in “other argue” and “The ad makers loves”; the plural subject “users” also takes “forces” in “users find them attractive and forces them.” There are problems with articles and number in “One of the reason,” and the final sentence has an unclear construction around “think it as a mean of distraction.” Improve agreement, singular/plural forms, and sentence construction, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
