IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Few individuals believe that advertising has a significant influence on consumers purchasing decisions, while others argue that its widespread presence has made people less attentive and they ignore it. Although excessive advertising can sometimes be ignored, I believe that it continues to play a crucial role in shaping customers behaviour. The same will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
Advertising plays a vital role in persuading people to purchase products. On the one hand, this is mainly because companies use attractive visuals, celebrity endorsements and persuasive language to capture consumers attention. Such marketing strategies can create a desire for products that people may not necessarily needed. Moreover, special offers and limited-time discounts can motivate buyers to make impulsive purchases rather than carefully consider their needs. For instance, social media influencers frequently promote skincare products, encouraging their followers to purchase this items.
On the other hand, the constant exposure to advertisements has caused many people to become less responsive to them. Individuals encounter promotional messages on television, social media platforms, websites and billboards. Consequently, repeated exposure can make advertisements seem irritating and uninteresting. Another factor is the growing scepticism among consumers, as some companies exaggerate the benefits of their products. For example, customers may disregard advertisements for beayty products if they have read negative reviews from previous buyers.
In my opinion, advertising remains influential because attractive promotions and targeted marketing can still persuade consumers to purchase products, despite the widespread presence.
In conclusion, advertising still influences customers purchasing decisions. However, its effectiveness depends on credible information and genuine consumer interest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: advertising can be ignored through overexposure, yet it still shapes purchasing behaviour. The two main body paragraphs are relevant and include supporting examples, such as influencer promotions and consumers dismissing beauty-product adverts after reading negative reviews. This meets the task well overall. However, some points are asserted more than explored: the first paragraph explains how promotions prompt purchases, but could clarify why this influence remains strong despite consumers’ awareness of advertising; the second could distinguish more clearly between ignoring adverts and actively distrusting them. Develop these links and make the comparison between the two views more explicit to strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Consequently” help readers follow the discussion. The organisation is effective, though some cohesion feels formulaic: “The same will be discussed in the following paragraphs” is an unnecessary signpost, and the separate opinion paragraph largely repeats the position already stated in the introduction and conclusion. You could integrate your judgement into the discussion of both views and use clearer references between ideas. This would make the progression more natural and reduce repetition while preserving the essay’s coherent arrangement.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “celebrity endorsements,” “limited-time discounts,” “impulsive purchases,” and “growing scepticism.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and some phrases show an attempt to be precise. However, several word-choice and collocation errors limit the naturalness of the writing, such as “consumers purchasing decisions,” “customers behaviour,” and “purchase this items.” There is also a spelling error in “beayty.” Aim to use possessive forms and collocations consistently, and proofread spelling. More precise alternatives for repeated general terms such as “products” and “influence” would also help you express the argument with greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses in “Although excessive advertising can sometimes be ignored” and “if they have read negative reviews.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with possessives, articles, and number agreement: “consumers purchasing decisions” needs a possessive marker, and “purchase this items” has a mismatch between the determiner and plural noun. In “products that people may not necessarily needed,” the verb form is also incorrect. Review these patterns and check each sentence for agreement and verb form. Greater consistency in these areas, alongside your existing complex structures, would improve accuracy.
