IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate that whether advertising is useful in persuading people to buy items, while others believe that advertisements are a common occurence in the present and no longer catches people's attention. In my perspective, advertising plays an important role in brand awareness and extending the reach of a product.

On the one hand, advertising is a useful tool due to the fact that it helps influence consumer behaviour. Advertising a product's usefulness and presenting advantages of the product over the works of other brands helps shape the purchasing decisions of individuals convincing them to buy the particular items which is being advertised. For example, a product which is being heavily advetised will have more people talking about it thus having a higher pick rate among similar products which are poorly advertised or not advertised at all.

On the other hand, the frequency of commercials produced in recent times have increased drastically in comparison to the last decade, this change can be mostly attributed to the increase in awareness for the importance of advertising in organizations. Companies in present times realised the importance of advertising and have dedicated an entire team of individuals who specialize in this field to help increase brand awareness and product reach. Due to this there is a surge of production of commercials that many consumers find it difficult to select the right product over the others.

In conclusion. advertsing is a useful tool in increasing brand awareness and sales even with the competition regarding the increased production of commercials in the current era.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state your own position in the introduction: advertising can build brand awareness and extend a product’s reach. The first body paragraph explains how promotion may influence purchasing decisions, while the second describes the prevalence of commercials. However, the second view is not fully addressed: you explain that there are many advertisements and that consumers may struggle to choose, but you do not clearly show why this means people stop noticing or ignoring them. Your opinion is also only briefly reinforced in the conclusion, and the discussion of increased sales is not developed with a clear supporting example. To strengthen the response, explain the opposing view directly and extend each main point with a specific example or consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the discussion easy to follow, and the ideas generally progress within each paragraph. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. The long sentence beginning “The frequency of commercials produced in recent times…” joins two complete ideas with a comma, and the link between advertising volume and consumers no longer paying attention is not made explicit. The conclusion also begins with a full stop after “In conclusion,” which interrupts the flow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and connect each paragraph’s evidence directly to its main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “consumer behaviour,” “purchasing decisions,” “brand awareness,” and “product reach.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions are attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “higher pick rate” is not a natural way to describe product preference, and “surge of production of commercials” is awkward. There are also spelling errors, including “occurence,” “advetised,” and “advertsing.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and control expected at a stronger level. Aim for more natural collocations and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “Due to this there is a surge…” and a relative clause in “items which is being advertised.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “advertisements … no longer catches” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “items which is being advertised” has a mismatch between the plural noun and verb. The sentence beginning “The frequency of commercials…” also contains a comma splice, while “In conclusion.” is incorrectly punctuated as a separate sentence. Review agreement, clause boundaries, and punctuation, and vary complex structures while keeping them controlled.
