IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many individuals think that advertising is a pertinent tool to push us to purchasing items. On the other hand, others do believe that advertising is so frequent to the point where it goes unseen.
Many think that advertising is a successful tool to make us buy products and services as nowadays we see ads literally everywhen and everywhere with a very high frequency. New techniques are developed to sit still in the unconsciousness of consumers. By stimulating their cognitive, affective and behavioral attitudes and possibly by the fact that x and y who are advertising for a certain product do have it as well , consumers tend to hit "buy" to fully satisfy their unconscious need.
On the other hand, some people do develop a sort of immunity to fight against the repetitive ads and the mechanism of advertising. Merely by pausing and asking someone's self: "Do I need this or it's just the perfection of the ad." As ads are run at a very high level, those same opponents, refuse to just fall in the trap and would rather save an extra dollar other than purchase something that might be useless on the long run.
I personally, think that advertising might be a very unstoppable tool if mastered perfectly and it would definitely work on both categories, by simply adjusting the techniques and the frequency of running.
In conclusion, advertising plays the role of a persuasive stimuli for buying, and at the same time, the detractor that we keep on seeing every now and then.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear personal position: advertising can influence consumers, but its effectiveness depends on how it is used. The first body paragraph explains unconscious influence, while the second presents resistance to repetitive advertising, so the response is relevant throughout. However, the two sides are not developed equally clearly. The claim that people buy products to satisfy an “unconscious need” would benefit from a concrete example, and the opposing view relies mainly on consumers pausing to question an advert. Your opinion that advertising can work on “both categories” is stated, but the conditions that make it effective could be explained more fully. Develop these points with specific examples and clearer reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” help signal the contrast, and the overall progression is easy to follow. Some connections, however, feel mechanical or unclear. The opening of the second body paragraph, “Merely by pausing and asking someone’s self,” is a sentence fragment rather than a complete link to the preceding idea. The conclusion also introduces “the detractor” without making clear what it refers to. Use complete topic sentences, connect examples explicitly to each view, and make references such as “those same opponents” and “both categories” unmistakable. This would make the organisation more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range and attempt more specialised language, including “cognitive, affective and behavioral attitudes,” “immunity,” and “persuasive stimuli.” These choices show ambition, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, though, which limits precision: “pertinent tool to push us to purchasing” and “ads are run at a very high level” do not convey the intended meaning naturally. “Everywhen” is also not an appropriate choice in this context, and “the perfection of the ad” seems to mean the persuasive appeal or presentation of an advert. Aim for accurate collocations and prefer clear, natural phrasing over technical-sounding vocabulary. This will help you express your ideas more precisely without losing the range you are attempting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex structures, including the sentence beginning “By stimulating their cognitive…” and the conditional idea that advertising works “if mastered perfectly.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. “Many individuals think that advertising is a pertinent tool to push us to purchasing items” has an awkward infinitive pattern, while “Merely by pausing and asking someone’s self” is a fragment. In “I personally, think,” the comma is misplaced; the sentence also needs clearer construction around “and it would definitely work.” There are further issues with possessive forms and sentence boundaries. Practise building complete sentences around introductory phrases and checking punctuation, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
