IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There are some individuals contend that commercializing the products at diverse platforms is highly successful at making us to purchase the products, while other people argue that it is so common nowadays that we do not bother such advertisement anymore. However, in my opinion, it is somehow right that these advertisements have become a distraction for the viewers who watch them.
In today's rapidly evolving world, advertisements have considerable impact on the business's profit and loss. Advertisement can be either on the social media applications or on the roads, such as sign boards and billboards. There are a few reasons that elaborate my opinion, i will discuss them. To begin with its timing, sometimes the online adds are so long that viewers get exhausted and the skip this regardless of paying attention to the commercial. Furthermore, some advertisements are being repeated again and again concluding the frustration of the audience. They start to get pissed.
Nevertheless, there is also a group of the general populace who pay attention to the product and get attracted towards the product. They buy and start to get some more chances of watching such adds. No doubt that advertising has played very important role in business community but now people have no time to stop in the middle of roads and read the billboards which is offering a product.
To conclude, I will give my suggestion that advertisements are now needed to be more unique that significantly grabs the attention of viewers. Such, a company or brand can attract more buyers to purchase their items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and give a position: you acknowledge that advertising can attract buyers, while arguing that its frequency and length make viewers ignore or resent it. The examples of long online adverts and repeated commercials are relevant and help explain the second view. However, the discussion is uneven: the claim that some people are attracted to products is only briefly stated, with little explanation of how advertising persuades them. Your opinion also shifts somewhat from saying adverts are a distraction to recommending that they become more unique, without clearly explaining how this resolves the issue. Develop both sides with specific reasoning and make your position consistent throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, discussion paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Nevertheless” and “To conclude” help readers follow the main stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. The sentence “There are a few reasons that elaborate my opinion, i will discuss them” announces points that are not clearly organised, and “They buy and start to get some more chances of watching such adds” does not make the relationship between buying and seeing adverts clear. Some linking phrases feel mechanical, while the conclusion introduces a recommendation rather than neatly drawing together the two views. Organise each paragraph around one clear point and connect examples explicitly to it.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “commercial,” “billboards,” “audience,” “frustration” and “attract,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “rapidly evolving world” and “considerable impact.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, including “commercializing the products,” “making us to purchase,” “get pissed” and “get some more chances of watching.” “Adds” is also an incorrect spelling of “ads,” and “advertisement” is repeated frequently. Choose more natural expressions for advertising and persuasion, and vary repeated terms with accurate alternatives such as “advertisements,” “campaigns” and “promotions.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a concession beginning “Nevertheless.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “There are some individuals contend” needs a relative clause or a different structure, while “making us to purchase” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Other problems include “Advertisement can be” where the article or plural form is needed, “the skip this” instead of “they skip this,” and inconsistent capitalisation in “i will.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles, pronoun reference and verb patterns, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these basics will make your ideas clearer.
